Position Summary

Research, Discovery & Innovation (RDI) invites applications for the position of Data Analyst. RDI promotes and supports world-class research and discovery, and encourages partnerships that will stimulate economic growth and sustain a high quality of life for our region.

The Data Analyst will work in Research Partnership Services (RPS), and report to the Director of Postaward Services in Sponsored Projects & Contracting Services. RPS is responsible for a suite of research administration services, including sponsored projects, contracting, research analytics, training, policy administration and technology tools to improve services to faculty researchers and research administrators. The Data Analyst will respond to research data requests from a variety of stakeholders at all levels of the institution to facilitate decision support and will work with RDI units to develop and track performance metrics to improve of services throughout RDI.

Sponsored Projects & Contracting Services (SP&CS), a unit of Research, Discovery & Innovation, assists the University of Arizona research community in its efforts to secure external funding by providing high quality administrative and financial services to assist faculty and staff with proposals, provide guidance on the management of grants and contracts, and offer training on research administration topics. SPS is responsible for submitting over 3,200 proposals and managing sponsored obligated funding of more than $545M annually (grants and gifts).

Research, Discovery & Innovation (RDI) supports world-class research and discovery by University of Arizona faculty, staff, and students with particular attention to the University’s land-grant mission of service to the State of Arizona. RDI enables the research success of University of Arizona faculty through its support of University research centers, institutes, museums, and core facilities; provision of research development, compliance and safety services; and strategic external partnerships. Duties & Responsibilities

• Works to support ongoing data needs for the Arizona Board of Regents annual research report and organizational financial review, research metrics, the NSF Higher Education Research and Development Survey, the NSF Postdoc Survey, and others.
• Creates, tests, and maintains dashboards, reports and other analytical data tools using the UA enterprise data warehouse.
• Creates, reviews, and disseminates reports using Academic Analytics.
• Generates data, analysis, projections/forecasts and reports.
• Works with data owners and users to define analytical data. needs/requirements for research data, and present reports/dashboards as requested.
• Works with RDI units to develop and track unit-specific performance metrics to improve services.
• Communicates results of analysis as a comprehensive report to stakeholders, including graphical tools that aid in review of the data.
• Plans, designs, and creates written documentation related to assignments, such as problem identification/tracking; progress reports; proposed and implemented solutions; and metadata.
• Works with the Enterprise Information and Analytics team, as needed, to construct reports and data requests.
• Trains RDI colleagues on use of UAccess Analytics and dashboards created for RDI units.
• Learns and applies new tools to improve reporting and data generation.
• Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Strong knowledge of PC applications, including spreadsheets, word processing, internet file upload, PDF forms, and e-mail.
• Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Knowledge of accounting and budgetary principles, practices and procedures.
• Skill in applying accounting and financial management practices and principles.
• Skill in financial analysis and decision-making.

Minimum Qualifications

• Federal regulations require that the incumbent be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident to be ITAR/EAR compliant.
• Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems or related field AND two years of progressively complex experience developing automated data reporting.
• Five years of experience in procedural or business analysis work, including two years of progressively complex experience using automated data reporting tools or Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
• Proficiency in MS Office applications, including Access and Excel
• Knowledge of and skill in using relational and dimensional databases and models.
• Knowledge of and skill in using SQL and OLAP systems.
• Knowledge of and skill in using basic methods of statistical analysis.
• Skill in organizing, coordinating, and analyzing, complex technical projects.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge and expertise in UAccess Analytics, Financials, Research, and Employee
• Knowledge and expertise in UA financial, administrative, and research policies and procedures.
• Highly self-motivated and self-managed; proactive in responding to institutional needs.
• Knowledge and experience with Academic Analytics and Tableau
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team with minimal coaching or supervision.
• Ability to organize and work under strict time and production deadlines, while producing quality deliverables.
