Position Summary

The Department of Management Information Systems (MIS), part of the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona, invites applications for a developer (applications & database). This is an NSF-funded project and a very exciting opportunity to be part of cutting-edge research. Continuing in the position is subject to a successful annual review, up to a maximum of three years.


The selected candidate will develop scalable techniques for organizing, analyzing and publishing big data arising from a variety of archaeological and anthropological sources including archaeological archives, reports, museum collections and existing databases. The candidate will integrate the disparate data sources using Neo4J. They will also develop a web front-end and a suite of tools to support the retrieval and analysis of data. The selected candidate should be comfortable with all phases of the software development life cycle.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Fulfills program goals and ensures optimal data management system functionality based on analysis and execution of user and management requests.
• Designs, develops, maintains and administers databases using Neo4J, MySQL, Oracle, etc.
• Writes and maintains software code, queries and reports and develops applications using modern tools, methodologies and languages (e.g., Java, Python, etc.).
• Creates and maintains functional and technical documentation and test plans.
• Consults with users of varying skill levels regarding programming requests, applications training, user support and troubleshooting using existing ticketing and communication channels.
• Performs tests, evaluates results in accordance with quality assurance standards and writes test reports.
• Researches, evaluates, recommends and uses emerging and/or relevant methodologies, languages, technologies and best practices.
• Implements and maintains compliance with current security and service protocols and standards.
• Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Detail-oriented and must be able to work independently.
• Skill in using analytics, logic and reasoning to troubleshoot issues and find the best solutions to challenges.
• Skilled at project management and prioritizing issues and requests.

Minimum Qualifications

• Proven experience programming in languages such as Java, Python, C# and/or R.
• Proven experience with SQL and relational databases such as MySQL, Oracle or SQL Server.
• Experience with Neo4J.
• Proven experience with HTML5, CSS3, PHP (or similar language), Javascript, JQuery.
• Experience with designing and implementing web-based front-ends for databases.
• Experience with version control systems such as Git.

Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Five years of experience in programming applications systems using relevant technologies and programming languages; OR, an Associate’s degree in Computer Science or related field AND four years of experience in programming applications systems using relevant technologies and programming languages; OR, Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field AND two years of experience in programming applications systems using relevant technologies and programming languages; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in MIS, Computer Science or a related field.
• Experience working an inter-disciplinary team of researchers.
• Knowledge of NoSQL platforms.
• Strong knowledge of data structures and algorithms.
• Experience with data visualization tools, such as D3.js, GGplot, etc.
• Experience with research methods including data mining, statistics, and graph/network analysis.
• Expertise with graph theory, complex network analysis and visualization.
• A deep understanding of database concepts like joins, indexes, aggregation, SQL optimization.
• Strong knowledge of programming constructs, e.g. flow control, data structures and design patterns.
• Experience with development/deployment, testing methodologies and scalability concerns.
• Experience with server administration, including database and web server operations.
• Experience with modern programming methodologies and frameworks.
• Experience with build and release automation, including unit and integration testing, continuous integration, continuous development, and monitoring.
