Position Summary

The Instructional Specialist position will be located in Maricopa County and will assist the Extension Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) Program Coordinator, Sr. and Agent in the overall teaching of limited-income adults in all site-types that fall within the EFNEP parameters in an assigned region in Maricopa County. This position will report to the Maricopa County EFNEP Program Coordinator, Sr., as well as the Agent in charge of programming.

There are four positions ranging from 0.50 FTE to 0.75 FTE. This position is located in the greater Phoenix area.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • May teach in English and Spanish as well as translate and interpret as assigned and/or situation warrants.
  • Actively recruit participants, keeps a full schedule of classes, maintains EFNEP records, and turns in paperwork at required due dates.
  • Promptly return emails and voice messages from supervisors, colleagues, and community contacts and liaisons.
  • Work autonomously and be self-motivated with attention made to accountability to EFNEP leadership.
  • Teach the EFNEP lesson series to limited-income adults, in an assigned region in Maricopa County, to all site-types (e.g. community centers, school parent programs, rehab centers, church outreach centers, etc.) that fall within the EFNEP parameters in the assigned region in Maricopa County.
  • Instruct in EFNEP subject matter as required including participating in low-impact physical activity demonstrations.
  • Teach and participate in physical activity demonstrations, games, and lessons.
  • Become familiar and collaborate with project partners; as well as network with community based organizations and public agencies to encourage collaborative efforts with holding EFNEP classes at their sites.
  • Actively encourage an affirmative action program that solicits and involves all qualified EFNEP eligible participants including minorities and other protected classes in planning and participation in the program.
  • Provide and collect EFNEP participant evaluation forms (e.g., USDA Pre and Post Surveys).
  • Provide nutrition education at school/community events such as health fairs, field days, etc.
  • Prepare EFNEP assignments, curriculum, classroom activities, and other materials for each class.
  • Assist with data gathering activities.
  • Transport nutrition materials and incentives to designated locations.
  • Provide food demonstrations/tastings as health codes and laws permit and in collaboration with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education program (SNAP-Ed) housed under the Maricopa County Extension.
  • Assist professional faculty members in the development of program proposals/reports as required.
  • Answer inquiries and provide information relating to the completion of EFNEP forms, meetings, materials and recordkeeping.
  • Attend all-day meetings and meetings that require overnight stays in Tucson and other parts of Arizona up to a few times per year.
  • Assist with other EFNEP activities as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of nutrition, life skills, and physical activity teaching principles, practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of general organizational practices that allow programs to run effectively and smoothly in Maricopa County.
  • Knowledge of the ethical handling of research data.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally, via email, voicemail, and social media as well as in writing.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
  • Must have a reliable, personal vehicle with the proper Arizona registration and insurance.
  • Must be able to transport handouts and incentives to designated sites.
  • Must be able to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Must be able to attend all-day meetings and meetings that require overnight stays in Tucson and other parts of Arizona up to a few times per year.
  • Must be able and willing to teach and participate in physical activity demonstrations, games, and lessons.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and work smartly and effectively to reduce risk of injury during lifting, packing, and transporting program materials.
  • Experience working with and teaching at-risk and limited income families and volunteers.
Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, four years of progressively responsible instructional or subject work experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Familiarity with the Maricopa County area.
