Reporting jointly to the Dean, James E. Rogers College of Law, and the Senior Vice President for Development for the University of Arizona Foundation, the Senior Director of Development is responsible for the management and direction of all development activities in support of the Law College. This position is jointly managed by the James E. Rogers College of Law and the University Development Program (UDP), which is managed under contract by the University of Arizona Foundation. The Senior Director is expected to devote 70% of work time to major gift fundraising activities and 30% of work time to management and administrative responsibilities. The Senior Director will lead and mentor a team that includes an Assistant Director, Alumni and Development; an Alumni Coordinator, and an Administrative Assistant.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Advise the Dean of the Law College and President of the University of Arizona Foundation or designee on all matters related to development activities within the Law College;
• Plan, direct, and manage development and alumni relations activities;
• Develop short- and long-term strategic plans, and set goals and objectives;
• Coordinate an active annual giving program with the University Development Program’s Annual Giving Office;
• Direct and manage the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major individual, corporate and foundation prospects;
• Write or supervise the production of complex documents such as grant applications, major gift proposals, annual and stewardship reports and communication materials;
• Draft talking points for the Dean as needed for development-related presentations;
• Actively participate in managing data in Raiser’s Edge or any future development system;
• In coordination with the communications team at the College of Law, direct the creation of materials in support of all college fund-raising efforts;
• Support the Dean in managing the activities of the Dean’s Economic Council, Law College Association, Board of Visitors, and other important groups of stakeholders;
• Advise and collaborate with the Law College’s departments and centers regarding their development initiatives;
• Actively communicate with Law College departments to explore ways to leverage programming and events to support all College strategic initiatives;
• Assist in providing alumni and development support for Law College priorities, including admissions and career development;

Management and Collaboration
• Supervise, monitor and coordinate the activity of the development team, including professional and classified staff and student employees;
• Participate, as requested, in Law College, University of Arizona and University of Arizona Foundation administrative committees and strategic planning activities;
• Play a central role in building a collaborative, team-oriented environment among the Law College leadership, administrative and development staff;
• Mentor and motivate Law College development staff and other staff in the departments and centers;
• Work cooperatively with University of Arizona Foundation central and executive staff and with development and alumni staff and leaders throughout the University of Arizona; and
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

The ideal candidate will have experience and proven success in major gift fundraising in an academic environment or related nonprofit setting and the ability to establish and maintain powerful relationships with donors, prospects and others. The appointed candidate will have a demonstrated capacity to bring people together to create a collective and collaborative vision that will engage and inspire donors. She/he will have the ability to work with academic and administration staff members, motivate and manage individuals for maximum performance, and make policy decisions when necessary. The Senior Director will have the ability to meet deadlines and juggle complex projects while maintaining a professional demeanor and a sense of humor. She/he will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and understand and work competently with budgetary procedures and policies. The Senior Director must be able to travel within the state and nationally and work evenings and weekends as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

-BA degree;
-Seven years of experience managing and directing a comprehensive fundraising program, as well as experience working in/with law firms.

Preferred Qualifications

-J.D. Degree
-Connections to and knowledge of the Arizona legal community;
-Knowledge of current legal education and legal employment trends;
-Experience in a law school setting;
-Demonstrated success in planning, organizing and managing fundraising campaigns;
-Experience building advisory boards and committee structures;
-Knowledge of planned giving techniques and the programs available to implement such gifts.
