Position Summary

The Department of Medicine is seeking a Research Specialist to provide dedicated clinical trials support. The position is housed within the Thomas Boyer Liver Institute which is home to a well-funded, vibrant and diverse research team. The Institute supports trials at all stages of liver disease and is growing to include patient centered research studies. The position will allow for a dynamic work environment with a great deal of patient contact and intellectual stimulation.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Coordinates and/or conducts patient record searches for study specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, some of which may include specialized archival research; modifies, adapts or varies standard procedures to meet the needs of the project and improves tests that are unsatisfactory.
  • Maintains recruitment lists and coordinates with providers for purposes of determining eligibility.
  • Recruits and consents study patients, in both an inpatient and outpatient setting.
  • Conducts data collection specific to the study protocol.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation in research databases of all study data and collaborates with the data manager in creating and maintaining databases to ensure thorough data management.
  • Supports Research Nurses in the conduct of clinical trials by the maintenance of the inventory of laboratory supplies and study specific lab kits.
  • Performs phlebotomy and processes; ships study specific specimens per protocol.
  • Makes subject appointments in the clinical research unit.
  • Performs ECGs and other study specific procedures as assigned.
  • Performs administrative functions such as assisting in projecting budgets and preparing regulatory documents.
  • Analyzes data, writes research progress reports including summarizing test results of participating investigators, assists in the preparation, and writing of papers for publication; assists in writing reports.
  • May supervise, monitor or coordinate work of subordinates (rotating students).

  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of the subject discipline.
  • Knowledge of modern research methods, data collection, analysis, and skill in their application.
  • Skill in analyzing and evaluating data.
  • Skill in report writing.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work within a team.

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND two years related research experience; OR, Six years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

  • Certified in Phlebotomy and basic lab processing experience.
