Position Summary

University of Arizona Health Sciences (UAHS) is seeking a Phoenix-based Engagement Manager to support a federally-funded 5-year joint effort, the All of Us Research Program at the University of Arizona and Banner Health.

This national initiative will contribute significantly to the development of a research cohort that will engage 150,000 participants from our region who volunteer their health data over many years to improve health outcomes, fuel the development of new treatments for disease, and catalyze a new era of data-based and more precise preventive care and medical treatment.

The Engagement Manager will provide daily direction and supervision to one or more team members dedicated to engagement and communications. This position will focus on relationship-building and management of meaningful interactions with diverse health care providers, leaders, communities, organizations and stakeholders for the All of Us Research Program at UA and Banner Health. S/He will work closely with colleagues at UA and Banner to direct robust engagement and retention plans and activities, and ensure coordination of important communications, and provide technical support for study leaders related to engagement and communications for this multi-site and multi-state study.

The ultimate goal is to ensure successful implementation of the research program to meet national and local milestones for engagement, enrollment, and retention of diverse participants. Constituents will include participants enrolled in the research program, Banner patients and families, healthcare providers, and other employees, UA providers and employees, community partners and board members, and the general public.

The Engagement Manager will work closely with Principal Investigators and staff at our sites across UA and Banner, as well as National Institutes of Health (NIH) and its engagement and communication teams to ensure that oversight and approval of messaging and activities is obtained and disseminated, and that local materials and messages are tailored to individual communities as part of our Engagement, Outreach, and Dissemination activities, for diverse racial/ethnic and geographically diverse communities and individuals.

This position will be based out of Phoenix, AZ. Regular in-state travel between Tucson and Phoenix will be required for periodic meetings, as well as less frequent out-of-state travel with notice.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Supervise engagement and communications team member(s) as assigned, providing a positive environment dedicated to achieving outcomes and milestones.
  • Work closely with the UA and Banner communications teams as well as external partners to develop, plan, obtain approval, and effectively disseminate news, communications, media relations, collateral materials and outreach events.
  • Creatively contribute to development communications-related activities.
  • Support, coordinate, assign, and implement the activities of the UA and Banner engagement and communications teams, ensuring achievement of milestones and deadlines.
  • Develop, compile, write and edit communications for review and required approval by the local and national communications team such as email messages, website content, press releases, e-newsletters, brochures or flyers; coordinates process from development through printing and distribution.
  • Interact and maintain liaison with UA, Banner, NIH, and outside/community agencies and partner in facilitating the program’s objectives and core values.
  • Support and manage strategies to connect with Hispanic and other communities.
  • Identify, build, and maintain relationships with community organizations, provider offices, and faith-based organizations to enhance PMI presence in the community.
  • Develop and schedule work plans in accordance with specifications and funding allowances; oversees daily operations and coordinates communications activities; implements actions based on leader-identified priorities.
  • Manage content generation, social media, and video production.
  • Prepare periodic reports and records on program activities, progress, status or other special reports for management or outside agencies.
  • Evaluate communications effectiveness to develop improved methods and process; devises evaluation methodology and implements; analyze results and recommends and/or takes appropriate action.
  • Participate in meetings and committees to implement plans and identify additional collaborative opportunities for promoting the program.
  • May coordinate and direct events.
  • Other duties as identified.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, or related field required AND four years marketing and communications experience; OR, Eight years of progressively responsible marketing/communications experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources.
  • Experience with technical tools such as website content management, customer management applications, or cloud-based collaboration tools.
  • Two years demonstrated experience leading, supervising, or training.

  • Outstanding strategic thinking, planning and communications skills.
  • Social media experience.
  • Self-motivated, willing and able take initiative.
  • Ability to work both independently and with a team, resolving issues with a positive outcome.
  • High level of integrity, ethics and professionalism.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and computer skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated experience or understanding of clinical research or academic research settings.
  • Substantive experience with detailed marketing and/or communications-related project management programs to maintain and provide daily, weekly, and monthly progress reporting to various stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with highly technical or cloud-based collaboration tools, including Confluence, Slack, and/or Box, and with social media applications.
  • Experience building relationships across organizations.
  • Bilingual (Spanish and English).
