Position Summary

The Buyer Associate assists in the purchase of product in any/all commodities within General Merchandise, and ensures purchase orders are entered correctly and in a timely matter following the guidance of the buyer for that commodity. The Buyer Associate will work to understand the needs and customer demand of product categories and brands. The Associate will also assist on the sales floor during busy periods and for special events. This position is required to work some nights and weekends throughout the year.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Analyze sales and advise buyers on merchandise needs; work with Fulfillment Center to ensure proper priorities in filling orders.
  • Examine purchase orders for assigned areas, ensuring complete and accurate information is provided for the buying procedure.
  • Secure bids on requisitions or process them for purchase, prepare bid invitations and recommend approval of bids most advantageous to the university.
  • Confer with buyers with respect to questionable items on purchase orders.
  • Seek new sources of supplies for materials and equipment and secure terms favorable to the University.
  • Maintain records of supplies, amounts ordered and received, and actual sales records on items and vendors.
  • Interview sales representatives to develop new sources of supplies; source favorable terms for the university; update records and files; secure samples, descriptions, photos or information for buyers.
  • Attend meetings between buyers and vendors to ensure information is conveyed to the appropriate parties.
  • Assist on Sales Floor regularly and during busy periods and special events.
  • Research and introduce new product categories to meet customer demands and expectations.

  • Skill in preparing specifications and analyzing bids.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.

Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree in related field AND one year of purchasing, expediting or directly related experience; OR, three years of purchasing, expediting or directly related experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of sales experience.
  • Knowledge of merchandising techniques and methods for specialized and/or technical products.
  • Knowledge of product selection and purchasing practices.
  • Knowledge of and proven ability to apply customer service techniques.
  • Previous knowledge of skin care products.
