The University of Arizona University Information Technology Services department is recruiting for a Communications Network Analyst, Senior. The position is responsible for installing, supporting, and maintaining the UA’s network security infrastructure. The successful candidate will be tasked with installation and configuration of network security elements including firewalls, virtual private networks (VPN), intrusion detection systems, as well as with providing customer focused support necessary to ensure maximum availability.

The University of Arizona’s extensive network consists of over 2,000 routers and switches. The network core was recently upgraded with new Cisco equipment and is running at 100Gps. The wireless network has over 9000 AP’s and is one of the largest deployments on U.S. college campuses. The candidate will utilize industry best practices to provide guidance and expertise related to network security, both internally and to network managers in other UA departments.

The Infrastructure Team is a group of highly-technical and analytical individuals who are responsible for functioning autonomously, but also as a collaborative team member. The team is seeking an additional member who is detail-oriented, driven and energetic about network technology to fulfill the goals of the department.

Duties & Responsibilities

•Participates in network security planning, design and development projects; evaluates existing network security resources, conducts needs analysis, researches hardware and software alternatives and conducts simulations of proposed solutions. Implements new or upgraded systems.
•Maintains network security infrastructure, hardware, software, services and configuration including upgrades. Installs tests and optimizes components and services.
●Provides guidance and expertise on best practices related to secure network design both internally and to network managers in other University departments.
●Monitor new developments in security, proactively consider potential impact of new vulnerabilities, and suggest countermeasures as appropriate.
•Evaluates new hardware and software for completeness and compatibility with existing systems and recommends systems for purchase. Recommends operational, policy and procedural changes.
•Monitors and implements network security device use and security protocols.
●Collaborates with other team members to design, implement, and maintain hardware or virtual firewalls internally or for departmental subnets.
●Operates and manages virtual private networks (VPN).
●Monitors, tunes, and responds to intrusion detection systems.
•Analyzes and/or troubleshoots complex network security hardware and software malfunctions.
•Maintains project documentation regarding network security hardware and software installation and maintenance.
•Guides technical staff on projects of limited scope or on portions of large/complex projects.
•Analyzes performance metrics to ensure optimal performance of the production network
•Act as a Tier 2/3 support for Remedy tickets and TMIS work orders when needed.
•Participates in an on-call rotation for network and security emergencies.
•Evaluates, selects, installs and configures new networking tools, and the associated processes and procedures necessary to ensure maximum availability
•Assumes and performs other duties and responsibilities not specifically outlined herein, but which are logically and properly inherent to the position

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

•Ability to understand and successfully troubleshoot interactions between different elements, of primarily Cisco network, such as routers, switches, firewalls, VoIP, and wireless
•Ability to ensure network stability and availability through the use of monitoring and reporting tools
•Ability to interface with multiple clients including NOC personnel, technicians, network managers and IT personnel, and provide them with support and training when needed.
•Customer-focused mindset concerned with giving prompt responses, consistent follow up, and fast turn-around on problem resolution.
•Ability to work autonomously and collaborate with effectively and efficiently with team members

Five years of progressively responsible experience installing, operating and maintaining communications network hardware and software and participating in network planning and design; OR, an Associate’s degree in Computer Information Technology or related field AND four years of progressively responsible experience installing, operating and maintaining communications network hardware and software and participating in network planning and design; OR, Bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Technology or related field AND two years of progressively responsible experience installing, operating and maintaining communications network hardware and software and participating in network planning and design; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications

•Prior experience implementing and supporting Cisco networking environment, preferably in a higher education setting.
●Experience with current commercial and open-source security tools, such as Nmap, Snort, tcpdump, etc.
●Experience with technical information security in one or more of the following areas: enterprise firewall management, intrusion detection, wireless, VoIP, or vulnerability assessment.
•Possess security and/or networking related certifications such as RHCE, various GIAC, Cisco (CCIE/CCNP-Security/CCNP/CCNA), etc.
•Skill in effectively communicating technical subjects both verbally and in writing.
•Possesses a desire to learn and share information within a strong team environment.
