Position Summary

This position will be stationed at The University of Arizona’s Safford Agricultural Center (SAC) located in Safford, Arizona which is approximately 125 miles northeast of Tucson, AZ. Incumbent will perform farm activities, supervision of laborers, minor repairs, and maintenance related tasks at SAC, but occasionally will also be performing these at other locations in Southern Arizona dependent on department involved research activities at remote sites.

This benefits eligible position, to be hired at 30-40 hours per week, follows a M-F schedule. Hours will be from 7:30am-4:00pm, dependent on part time/full time status, and will require flexibility to accommodate late night, overnight, and weekend irrigation schedules during the growing season. Incumbent will be working outside in adverse weather conditions.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Irrigates, plants, weeds, cultivates, and harvests experimental plots and field crops, and records these activities in writing.
  • Drives and operates tractors, cotton pickers, sprayers, harvesters and other farm equipment.
  • Applies pesticides and fertilizers, including measuring and mixing chemicals and calibrating the application equipment.
  • Drives truck to transport farm supplies, tools and equipment to and from off-site locations.
  • Makes purchases using departmental purchasing card in order to procure needed cleaning, repair and maintenance supplies.
  • Assists researchers with data collection on-site and at off-site research locations.
  • Performs maintenance and/or minor repairs on farm vehicles to include adding fluids, and changing fluids, oil, filters, hoses, wiper blades and belts.
  • Performs minor electrical, plumbing, masonry and carpentry work for the construction and maintenance of buildings and irrigation ditches.
  • Cleans shops, sheds, and office facilities.
  • Maintains facilities: mowing, weeding, raking, pruning, painting.
  • Supervises and works with inmate work crew engaged in above described farming activities; vehicle, building and facility maintenance activities; building, facility and equipment repair activities; and cleaning activities.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
  • Knowledge of general farm operations, including siphon pipe irrigation, pesticide and fertilizer application.
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of farm equipment, including tractors, cotton pickers, planters, sprayers and cultivators.
  • Knowledge of planting, cultivating and harvesting techniques.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and to follow instructions.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills: able to log into websites and to access email communications.
  • Ability to effectively record daily activities as a means of documenting events at the Center.
Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications
  • Two years of farm work experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
  • Possession of a current Arizona Type D driver’s license upon employment.
