Position Summary

The University of Arizona Libraries are seeking an experienced, engaged and imaginative Department Head for our Department of Research & Learning (R&L). Librarians in R&L are key partners in the University’s research enterprise and educational mission; and, as liaisons, each are assigned academic or academic support units with which to work. Collectively, they engage students, faculty and researchers across all disciplines and serve as a critical conduit for active and open communication between academic units and the Libraries as a whole. They pursue opportunities where the Libraries can facilitate greater research productivity or improve student learning by inserting services and expertise into the teaching, learning, or research workflows.

UAL is moving towards a “hybrid model” of liaison librarianship, where R&L liaisons establish and maintain strong partnering relationships within their assigned colleges and departments. These connections serve as an essential means by which the University of Arizona Libraries support research, teaching, and learning on campus. Liaisons provide in-depth assistance and consultations on behalf of their clientele, and have developed and maintain individual functional specialties. As part of this hybrid model, liaisons actively consult with colleagues within R&L as well as other specialists throughout the Libraries and encourage connections when additional support is needed. The department is also responsible for the Libraries’ instruction program; and, with other library units, for information resources management. Our approach emphasizes information literacy embedded programmatically within campus teaching and learning.

The Department Head of R&L works closely with department members to facilitate a shared vision and a commitment to the strategic directions of the Libraries. The Department Head leads and coordinates the work of the department, which includes programmatic service areas supporting undergraduate and graduate education, information literacy instruction, research support, needs assessment, and reference. In addition, the incumbent provides departmental leadership (ally-ship, advocacy, facilitation, influence, guidance) and management oversight (hiring, appreciative inquiry, promoting diversity and inclusive excellence values, training, coaching, evaluating department members and requesting, allocating, and monitoring funds) to ensure that department members are supported in their work and are given the opportunity to develop professionally.
The Department Head ensures that departmental planning is inclusive and follows established practices.

The incumbent represents the Libraries in collaborative campus and community (local, state, national) activities related to teaching and learning (both graduate and undergraduate), information literacy, and liaison services. The R&L Department Head is a member of Cabinet, the administrative leadership team for the University Libraries, and participates in or sponsors library-wide or campus-wide projects. As a Cabinet member, the incumbent is engaged in library-wide policy development, budget allocation, and management oversight for library projects and processes.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Understands, advocates for, communicates, and exhibits a strong commitment to the Libraries’ mission, vision, values, and goals, and effectively conveys the broader context in which the Libraries operate. Leads the department in translating library and department strategic goals into action to support the University and Libraries customers.
  • Coaches and mentors all members in career and skill development and ensures that all members have the tools and support needed to do their work. Provides positive reinforcement for excellent performance and coaches to improve performance when needed.
  • Champions the department and its members to stakeholders inside and outside of the Libraries, serving as an ally with and an advocate for liaisons.
  • Anticipates, initiates, and responds to changes in the environment and keeps abreast of trends that impact libraries and higher education.
  • Demands honesty in self and others and models the Libraries’ values of diversity, continuous learning, innovation, collaboration, and integrity.
  • Develops strong relationships and actively collaborates with other department and unit heads in pursuit of departmental and library goals.
  • Cultivates external relationships with Deans, Associate Deans, faculty, and donors in order to assess needs, leverage opportunities, build future collaborations, and promote the Libraries as a campus-wide resource.
  • As a member of Cabinet, contributes to efficient and effective decision-making around policies and
    operational issues. Communicates the rationale behind decisions to inform and clarify Cabinet’s work to the Libraries. Facilitates inter-departmental communication.
  • Leads the department in strategic planning and in assessing employee performance, accountability, and goal setting.
  • Actively and constructively addresses problems or conflicts and removes barriers.
  • Ensures that librarians are coached and mentored through the promotion and continuing status process.
  • Leverages business acumen through the management of departmental resources.
  • Supports and practices Inclusive Excellence to increase diversity and inclusiveness in the Libraries.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Experience with and understanding of the research process, and the role of research in the contemporary academy.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, both written and verbal. Ability to interact effectively with clients, colleagues, campus administrators, and community leaders.
  • Knowledge of trends in technology, information resources in all formats, and the needs of faculty, researchers, and students.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative and inclusive environment, one that values and leverages the benefits of diverse perspectives. Experience and a history of engagement with diversity and inclusion efforts in the academy.
  • Positive attitude and strong demonstration of the Libraries’ values: collaboration, continuous learning, diversity, innovation.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Successful leadership of a library liaison program with commensurate management and coaching experience, including knowledge of and experience providing core and emerging services to faculty in support of the teaching, learning, research, and outreach missions of an academic institution.
  • Demonstrated success in leading and managing a team, department or significant program or project in a frequently changing environment.
  • Demonstrated success in coaching, mentoring, motivating, recognizing, and holding staff accountable with an emphasis on maximizing individual success and growth.
  • Achievements in position effectiveness, service, and scholarship necessary to be hired at the rank of Associate or Full Librarian with continuing status (equivalent to tenure). Demonstrable abilities to lead and support department faculty across the continuum of rank.
  • Evidence of active and ongoing contributions to the information/library profession and the ability to fulfill the responsibilities of a library faculty member through service and scholarship.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated fiscal and budgetary knowledge. Ability to lead and supervise in a collaborative and innovative environment and to work with diverse people and serve a diverse population.
  • Experience with strategic planning and in translating the resulting strategies into programs or projects that can be implemented to further library goals. Willingness to operate from a Libraries-wide and departmental perspective in decisions and determining priorities.
  • Commitment to the Libraries’ vision, mission, values, and goals and the ability to communicate them clearly and persuasively in a variety of contexts.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate innovative ideas into actionable programs or services.
  • Ability to liaise with various campus, state, and community organizations to develop and implement workable programs, enhance service to customers, and communicates the Libraries strategic goals and directions.
  • Demonstrated commitment to risk taking and continuous improvement.
