Position Summary

General Position Summary:

The University of Arizona College of Science is seeking a motivated and goal-oriented professional to join the Dean, the College of Science Development team and the University Development Program (UDP) in supporting our efforts to significantly increase philanthropic support and to have a positive impact on achieving strategic growth for the College. The Associate Director of Development assists the Senior Director of Development and other members of the Science Development team in planning and implementing all development activities. In addition, the Associate Director of Development will work directly with major gift prospects of the College to secure gifts of $25,000 or more to further the goals and objectives of the College of Science.

The Associate Director of Development will gain an in-depth understanding of the College’s donors and prospective donor pools, as well as the school’s overall fundraising processes, strategies and goals. The person in this role is expected to work collaboratively with all members of the College of Science Development and Administrative team, Department Heads and Directors, and other University of Arizona Foundation (UAF) and University of Arizona personnel as appropriate. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to create and sustain personal relationships. The position requires travel on a regular basis throughout Arizona and other regions including overnight stays, in addition to work on evenings and/or weekends as necessary to cultivate and solicit donor prospects.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Actively work with the Dean and members of the College of Science Development team in planning and implementing all development activities within the College.
• Work toward building and managing a major gift prospect/donor portfolio of 75-100 donors/prospects.
• After an initial 3- to 6-month on-boarding period, execute an agreed upon metric of 100+ current or prospect donor visits and presentation of 15+ proposals per year, with a focus on qualifying major gift prospects and securing gifts of $25,000 or more, and an expectation to raise in excess of $500,000 annually.
• Maintain up-to-date donor/prospect portfolio, including contact reports and proposals.
• Develop and execute strategic, personalized cultivation, solicitation and stewardship plans for assigned major donors and prospects (individual, corporate, and foundation) through personal visits, letters, phone calls, email and other methods.
• Actively work with the Dean and Department Heads in the College of Science and their staff in expanding, cultivating and growing philanthropic support through their advisory boards.
• Participate with the Dean and Department Heads in the College of Science in the strategic planning of new projects and initiatives.
• Partner with and effectively utilize the development professionals and resources of the UA Foundation.
• Work effectively as part of the greater University Development Program (UDP) as defined in the Development Services and Asset Management Agreement between the University of Arizona and the University of Arizona Foundation.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Excellent writing, speaking, interviewing and listening skills (demonstrated competence in the English language and grammar).
• Excellent time management and organizational skills.
• Ability to establish and maintain powerful and productive relationships with donors as well as development colleagues and UA faculty and staff.
• Strong initiative and ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
• Working knowledge of the ways donors can make charitable gifts, including cash, appreciated securities, real and personal property, and different planned giving methods.
• Ability to translate technical scientific information into lay language for potential donors.
• Ability to understand and work with budgetary procedures and policies.
• Ability to make introductory phone call to get appointment with donor prospects.
• Ability to make good decisions and exercise judgment and discretion.
• Ability to maintain donor confidentiality.
• Facility with modern communication and office equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university program.
• At least three years of development experience or in a related occupation (e.g., sales, public relations, communication etc).
• Outstanding interpersonal relationship skills.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Experience using Microsoft Office Suite products, particularly Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
• A valid driver’s license with the ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
• Possess personal attributes important for effectively representing the University of Arizona and the UDP, including honesty, integrity, a professional presence, an amiable and engaging personality, excellent interpersonal and conversational abilities, positive energy, a “can-do” attitude, a strong work ethic, and the drive to succeed.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of the sciences.
• Demonstrated success in securing major gifts in a higher education setting.
• Proficiency in Raiser’s Edge or equivalent fundraising database.
• Demonstrated knowledge of fundraising principles and procedures.
