The Director of Development (Director) will supervise a team of fundraisers and manage the identification, education, cultivation, and solicitation of major and principal gift prospects, while personally managing a major and principal gift portfolio. The Director will be a member of the University Development Program (UDP) and will partner closely with College of Medicine-Phoenix leadership, the University of Arizona Foundation, and the UAHS Development Team to create and exceed fundraising goals and objectives for the College of Medicine-Phoenix and other units within UAHS. Reporting to the Associate Vice President and Chief Development Officer for UAHS, the incumbent works closely with the Dean of COM-P and is jointly managed by UAHS and the UDP, which is managed under contract by the University of Arizona Foundation. The Director will devote approximately 70% of work time to major gift fundraising activities and 30% of work time to management and administrative responsibilities.

Duties & Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Work with College Leadership and the UAHS Development team to develop and implement fund-raising priorities for the College of Medicine-Phoenix and other UAHS units.
  • Develop and sustain strong relationships with College of Medicine-Phoenix leadership, faculty, board members, alumni, volunteers, patients, donors, and financial professionals.
  • Direct and manage the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major individual, corporate and foundation prospects.
  • Develop short- and long-term strategic plans and set goals and objectives.
  • Maintain a portfolio of prospects that support fundraising goals.
  • Utilize the University of Arizona and University of Arizona Foundation tools and systems for managing donor, alumni and prospect relationships as resources for planning and for managing and monitoring activities.
  • Utilize acknowledgment, gift receiving and relationship management systems.
  • Help to promote and maintain a culture of philanthropy across The College of Medicine-Phoenix, UAHS, and the University of Arizona.
  • Work within all established University of Arizona Foundation guidelines and the University of Arizona Gift policy to establish and maintain necessary internal processes and procedures.
  • Represent the College of Medicine-Phoenix, UAHS, UDP and the University of Arizona as needed.
  • Supervise a team of fundraisers and manage the identification, qualification, cultivation, and solicitation of major and principal gifts.
  • Travel with overnight and/or weekend stays will be required as necessary to cultivate and solicit donor prospects
  • Regular travel to Tucson to attend meetings with donors, staff and leadership will also be required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with donors, volunteers and faculty members.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and related office equipment.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems with minimal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university;
  • Five to seven (5-7) years of experience managing and directing a comprehensive fund-raising program or equivalent in a higher education, non-profit or health sciences setting;
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising capacity;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fund raising principles and procedures;
  • A valid driver’s license with the ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated success in planning, organizing and managing fund-raising campaigns.
  • Knowledge of Raisers Edge.
  • Knowledge of higher education, non-profit, or governmental policies and procedures.
