Position Summary

The University of Arizona (UA) Department of Medicine is seeking a Senior Faculty for the Division of Gastroenterology/Hepatology who will take on the role of Director in the Thomas D. Boyer Liver Research Institute. This position will provide leadership, support and mentoring for faculty and staff of the institute within the areas of research, education and clinical efforts. The successful candidate is expected to be an experienced academic leader and accomplished program builder with a national reputation in scholarship. The selected candidate will have a well-supported opportunity to continue the mission and growth of our world-class Liver Research Institute here at the University of Arizona. Qualified candidates must be eligible for a University of Arizona academic appointment at the Professor rank.

UA Health Sciences Center, consisting of 5 health science colleges, is a rapidly growing research enterprise focused on becoming an international leader in biomedical research and patient care. The UA College of Medicine in Tucson, the state’s premier academic health center, recently entered into a long-term partnership with Banner Health to create a statewide healthcare organization and comprehensive new model for academic medicine. The new Director will provide leadership, direction and administration for the institute, and will be an integral part of the clinical and teaching mission of the Division of Gastroenterology in the Department of Medicine.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Attract and retain highly-motivated and well qualified faculty, staff and students to the Liver Institute.
  • Enhance and expand the research portfolio of the institute
  • Work closely with the Division Chief of Gastroenterology and Chairman of the Department of Medicine to set the strategic direction for the institute.
  • Work to maintain and expand philanthropic support and develop relationships with donors.
  • Work closely with the Dean of the College of Medicine to develop research, education and service to promote the Liver Institutes visibility on national and international levels; likewise work with the Chair of Medicine to develop research, education and service.
  • Evaluate performance and initiate or recommend personnel actions such as merit increases, promotions, transfers, disciplinary or similar actions for personnel you supervise.
  • Encourage professional growth and development of personnel through in-service education and other programs.
  • Resolve grievances and other personnel problems within your area of responsibility.
  • Collaborate with members of the Department of Medicine to contribute to the educational mission pertaining to Gastroenterology/Hepatology in the College of Medicine and the Graduate College.
  • Champion and advocate for the Liver Institute and the GI Division and continue to promote interdisciplinary research and educational programs with the University and in the State of Arizona.
  • Provide community education and outreach programs.
  • Maintain morale and involvement of faculty.
  • Oversee Institute budgets, resources and fiscal management.
  • Assure implementation of and compliance with University policies.
  • Participate in clinical and teaching mission of Division of Gastroenterology\Hepatology.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • MD Degree.
  • Board Eligible / Board Certified in Gastroenterology.
  • Arizona Medical License.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive research experience; with several years’ experience in a senior academic leadership role
  • Successful and sustained leadership that is evidenced internationally.
  • Successful track record of academic leadership and team building
  • Experienced in cross disciplinary research initiatives and collaboration
  • Well developed understanding of the priorities, operation and strategy of relevant funding bodies as evidenced by a track record of funded research.
  • Successful and sustained record of winning high levels of research income
  • Proven experience of managing staff and their performance.
  • History of successful training and development of early career researchers, including PhD students.
  • Demonstrable track record in strategic and operational management and planning
  • Experience of financial planning and resource allocation,
  • Experience of leading and successfully initiating and implementing change
