Position Summary

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Arizona welcomes applications for Postdoctoral Research Associate I. This is a three-year postdoctoral position (non-tenure eligible) with an appointment beginning in Fall 2017.

This position is specific to the NSF TRIPODS project at the University of Arizona which is seeking postdoctoral researchers with interest in the theoretical foundations of data science, including graph theory, computational geometry, information visualization, and machine learning. The TRIPODS project is funded by the National Science Foundation and focuses on the theoretical foundations and algorithmic principles of data science, and basic research on topics ranging from the theory of large scale networks and optimization, to statistical modeling for natural language processing and Bayesian methods.

The work will be carried out at the University of Arizona, in Tucson, Arizona. The position(s) is available starting September 1, 2017 initially for 1 year, with the possibility of extension for another 2 years dependent upon performance and availability of funds. The successful candidate’s position will be housed in either the Department of Computer Science or Department of Mathematics with supervisor from CS, Math, or Statistics.

Duties & Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be deeply involved in the research mission of TRIPODS, working closely with domain experts and stakeholders from different departments. In particular, the candidate will have the opportunity and expectation to work in transdisciplinary teams with researchers in Computer Science, Mathematics, and Statistics, as well as with domain scientists and industry. We are interested in candidates with an ability to bridge the gaps between scientific endeavors and real-world applications, producing results with high external validity. The teaching commitment is between 3 to 6 units per year, which is the equivalent of two one-semester courses per academic year, as well as maintaining an active research program. Postdocs will have access to a travel allowance throughout his/her appointment to attend professional meetings.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or other related discipline by the time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications

Applicants should have strong algorithmic background, preferably related to graph theory, computational geometry, information visualization, and machine learning.
