Position Summary

This Research Specialist will be responsible for maintaining mouse colonies, isolating ventricular myocytes, performing molecular biology and protein analysis including western blotting, protein expression, protein purification, etc. There will also be lab management responsibilities that will include close work with the PI.

Experience working with mice and basic genotyping skills are a significant plus. Organizational skills and significant prior experience in a research lab are strongly preferred.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Responsible for Lab ordering and organization.
  • Prepare buffers and reagents.
  • Maintain mouse records, genotyping and basic husbandry (together with graduate students).
  • Cannulation and ex vivo “hanging” of mouse hearts for adult myocyte isolation (good hand-eye coordination required).
  • Perform molecular biology, western blotting and protein purification.
  • Operate and maintain specialized laboratory equipment.
  • Train students and staff in the operation of equipment and/or in the performance of technical procedures.
  • Analyze data and draft research progress reports including summarizing test results of assigned project.
  • Assist in the preparation and writing of papers for publication.

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND two years related research experience; OR, Six years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience handling mice and organizing colony.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and work well with others.
  • Motivation to expand skill set and take on responsibility for lab management.
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques of molecular and cell biology.
  • Dissection skills and anatomy knowledge.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Proven Experience with MS Word and Excel.
