University Information Technology Services (UITS) is recruiting for an Executive Director of Student and Academic Technologies. Reporting to the Vice President for Information Strategy and University Libraries (VPISUL), the selected candidate will be a key member of the Executive Leadership team responsible for strategic planning, budgeting, staffing, and campus partnerships to advance core and innovative technologies in support of student success at the University of Arizona. The successful candidate will be an established leader with a demonstrated record of accomplishment, preferably in a complex organization with higher education experience.

The Executive Director of Student and Academic Technologies is a new position responsible for leadership, direction, and management of a range of systems and services that support those efforts. This broad portfolio includes PeopleSoft Campus Solutions, the enterprise transaction system supporting all phases of student lifecycle management (recruitment, admissions, financial aid, registration and records, curriculum management, and student billing); D2L/Brightspace, our learning management system; lecture capture and other classroom technologies support; and student computing lab services. Future opportunities may also include forming deeper relationships with our analytics and student success partners, and finding new ways to provide technologies to support our students as they become lifelong learners and prepare to enter the modern workforce.

It is an exciting time of opportunity and change for the University and for our IT division. The University has very recently inaugurated a new president, which brings a time of re-acquaintance with and revitalization of our vision, purpose, and actions. Our division is responding by moving beyond its traditional technology focus to build a new organization more directly aligned to our strategic institutional goals. The successful candidate will join the VPISUL and UITS as a member of our executive leadership team purpose-built to guide the organization through this transformation and to position us for success as our institution enters its the next phase.

Our IT leadership works closely with our administrative partners across the University to implement cutting-edge tools and technologies to maximize the value of their interactions with students and with each other. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an ability to think holistically about the student experience, and be able to comprehend the services and support we provide through the lenses of various stakeholders, especially students, as well as the faculty and professionals with whom they interact. In general, this position will play a leadership role in attending to the whole ecosystem of systems and technologies that serve the student realm, including those that are not the direct responsibility of this position.

UITS is a $50M organization of approximately 230 people responsible for providing enterprise network, telecommunications, computing, and data services to the University of Arizona.  UITS offers a broad array of services to the university community ranging from deploying and managing the campus’ wired and wireless networks to stewardship of the administrative applications that support the HR, payroll, finance, and student lifecycle management activities of the institution. Also, UITS recently unveiled its next-generation high performance computing environment to support the computationally-intensive needs of UA research faculty. Including the deployment and management of our state-of-the-art wireless network, to support the teaching and learning activities of faculty and students.

Duties & Responsibilities

•Provide strategic leadership, direction, management and supervision for student and academic technologies. Bring energy and a sense of mission to this new department.
•Collaboratively create a strategic plan for advancing student systems and academic technologies on campus, working with appropriate partners.
•Facilitate the strategic and tactical planning to realize the vision.
•Manage the following teams and technologies within UITS, including:
oStudent Administration (PeopleSoft Campus Solutions)
oLearning Management (D2L/Brightspace)
oLearning Technologies (multiple products)
oStudent Computing Labs (OSCR)
•Lead the campus through the implementation of a robust governance structure.
•Ensure appropriate integration among all components in the student ecosystem including those not directly managed by UITS.
•Participate in the development and administration of a shared vision and evolving strategy for UITS information technology, based on campus priorities. Play a pivotal role in developing a new campus IT strategic plan.
•Anticipate, initiate and respond to changes in the environment, and keep abreast of trends that impact higher education and that ensure UITS and the University achieve their goals.
•Embrace ambiguity in a changing environment and commit to continual professional development, improvement, and learning for all staff.
•Manage the Student & Administrative Technologies unit budget.
•Provide overall UITS leadership as part of the UITS executive management team

Minimum Qualifications

UITS’ Executive Director of Student and Academic Technologies will be an accomplished technological leader and will possess, at a minimum, the following qualifications:
•A Bachelor’s degree in higher education, educational technology or other relevant area and significant relevant experience with demonstrated progression in responsibility; or any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
•An understanding of the student lifecycle and the systems required to support this lifecycle at a dynamic, complex higher education institution.
•Demonstrated skill at building and managing strong relationships with partners and clients, including faculty, administrators, support staff, and students.
•Ability to empathize with campus stakeholders and provide creative solutions to support their activities and the broad student-oriented mission of the university.
•Excellent interpersonal skills.
•Ability to work in a highly collaborative and inclusive environment, one that values and leverages the benefits of diverse perspectives.
•Strong verbal and written communication skills.
•Collaborative leadership style.
•Initiative, optimism, flexibility, integrity and follow through.

Preferred Qualifications

•An advanced degree in higher education, educational technology or other relevant area
•The ability to think strategically and bring together diverse groups of interests to coalesce in a unified vision
•An open style that engages others in problem-solving and a willingness to change strategic direction when presented with new and compelling data
•Political savvy coupled with the ability to communicate effectively to build and enhance relationships with staff, community, and various internal and external constituent groups
•The professional stature to garner the respect of UA’s faculty and administration as well as UITS staff
•Effective at managing own time and time of others with high volume workloads
•10 years of relevant experience with demonstrated progression in responsibility in a large complex institute of higher education
