Position Summary

Boyce Thompson Arboretum, located in Superior, AZ, is accepting applications for multiple Groundskeeper positions. The purpose of this position is to provide groundskeeper maintenance to this large public garden with the ability to work independently in a natural desert environment. Working conditions may be dirty, temperatures are often extreme, and the incumbent must be able to lift or carry at least 60-pound objects. This position requires being outdoors in varying weather conditions.

The Mission of Boyce Thompson Arboretum is to instill in people an appreciation of plants through the fostering of educational, recreational, research, and conservation opportunities associated with arid-land plants.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Maintains and cares for all plants in assigned area(s). This includes trimming, pruning, and fertilizing as necessary.
  • Controls weeds and pests as needed. This may include use of unrestricted chemicals.
  • Schedules, maintains, and coordinates plant watering activities in assigned area(s).
  • Designs, installs, and maintains irrigation system, as necessary, in assigned area(s).
  • Works with horticultural specialists and other groundskeepers, as needed.
  • Coordinates activities of volunteers and other staff when appropriate.
  • Performs minor maintenance and repairs on equipment and tools, as required.
  • Operates power equipment, large equipment, and hand tools associated with grounds maintenance and landscaping activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Horticulture.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be able to work outside in extreme temperatures and weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift at least 60 lbs.
  • Willing to work weekends and holidays.
  • Grounds maintenance or equivalent experience must reflect ability to independently manage broad spectrum of responsibilities without direct guidance and supervision.
Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications
  • One year of groundskeeping experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a large public garden or similar environment.
