Position Summary

At the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix, the Global Health Program exposes students to real life and at times primitive clinical and public health care due to the resource constraints typically found in developing nations. Students have the opportunity to apply their medical knowledge to health care situations around the world and to learn from colleagues and experts abroad in the fields of tropical medicine, nutrition and public health. These equal partnerships are aimed at promoting health equity here and abroad through the shared development of best practices. Students involved in the Global Health Program return better prepared to provide care to patients and communities in underprivileged countries.
Certificate of Distinction

The College of Medicine Phoenix offers a Global Health Certificate of Distinction. GH-Certificate of Distinction. During the 1st or 2nd year of medical school the students will participate in the Global Health Interest Group (GHIG) dedicated 1-week trip to the Dominican Republic where they will focus on clinical observations, develop clinical skills, and assess community needs in an underdeveloped environment, under the mentoring of faulty. This will be preceded by a 4-hour orientation given by key GH faculty. These field externships are mandatory for students pursuing a Global Health-Certificate of Distinction and are also attended by other UA affiliated students. The Director, Global Health Interest Group will oversee, direct and assist the student organization GHIG with the planning of the summer and fall trips.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Oversees, directs and assists the student organization Global Health Interest Group (GHIG) in the planning of the Summer and Fall Trips to the Dominican Republic.
  • Solicits clinical faculty volunteers to travel with students to Dominican Republic.
  • Organizes supplies and medication packing with students prior to travel, orders medications to take on trips.
  • Assists with recruiting and selecting additional faculty for GHIG trips.
  • Organizes fundraising events to raise funds for the GHIG trips.
  • Travels with GHIG students on trips providing faculty oversight.
  • Stays in communication with Administrative Associate (Global Health Program) in planning of trips, as Administrative Associate is responsible for processing all travel paperwork for students and faculty for each trip.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • MD, DO or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Teaching experience in an academic environment at the undergraduate medical student level.
  • Individuals who are selected for employment and do NOT currently hold a faculty title with The University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix, will be required to obtain faculty status. This will include obtaining letters of recommendation and review by the appropriate College review committee.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in underprivileged countries delivering healthcare.
