Position Information

Title Co-Block Director, Clinical Anatomy (Part-Time ) (Phoenix, AZ)
Department COM Phoenix Academic Affairs (0663)
Location Greater Phoenix Area
Position Summary

An individual is sought to serve as Co-Block Director for the Clinical Anatomy Block at The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix (COM-PHX). COM-PHX has 12 pre-clerkship blocks, along with four longitudinal courses that comprise the pre-clerkship curriculum. Each block is directed by a pair of accomplished educators, one a basic scientist, one a physician. This intentional pairing ensures that students receive current and critical instruction in the basic sciences as well as relevant clinical application of the material in each block. The Clinical Anatomy block is a fifteen-week block at the beginning of the MS1 year. The principal mission of the block is to provide students with an understanding of the three-dimensional structure of the human body as it pertains to clinical practice. Students dissect the human body, revealing the anatomical basis for performing clinical procedures and conducting the physical exam. In addition, students learn how to assess which structures may be injured or diseased based on a patient presentation. The Clinical Anatomy block occurs primarily in the gross anatomy laboratory so that students can develop visual, audio, and kinesthetic learning skills at the ‘bedside.’ This experience is made possible by the generous gifts of the willed body donors. The block also includes four workshops (one per exam unit) that take place in the learning studio. These workshops are designed to develop critical thinking skills and help students prepare for the exams. The Clinical Anatomy block provides foundational knowledge for subsequent blocks and courses in the curriculum and students learn about the relevant embryology, imaging, and histopathology in these other blocks/courses. The block also provides students with opportunities for professional development through working in small groups and with the willed body donors. Students and instructors participate in a Meet the Donor session at the beginning of the block and a Ceremony of Appreciation at the block’s conclusion. The ideal candidate for Co-Block Director will have a strong knowledge base in clinically and surgically relevant anatomy.
