Position Summary

The University of Arizona is seeking a Research Assistant to provide support for clinical specimen for and sample processing for the Center for Disparities in Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism. The Research Assistant will be responsible for collecting, logging, processing, and assuring proper transportation of biospecimens to the centers biobank using standardized protocols and consumables.

The successful candidates will report to the center administrator and senior clinical research coordinator and will work closely with the center’s research staff and leadership to advance the goals of the University of Arizona Center for Disparities in Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism, with a focus on the development, promotion, and advancement of research, education, and service. This position will work closely with Spanish and English speaking populations.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Work closely with the Clinical Research Coordinator, Sr. to support the activities of all team members.
  • Transport and set-up lab/data collection kits at clinical sites.
  • Collect and label samples, and as instructed in accordance with the protocol, manual of operations, standard operating procedure (SOP) or other work instruction set.
  • Ensure specimens are properly logged, handled, and stored.
  • Conduct data entry to ensure accuracy, quality and compliance of data collection.
  • Document in applicable systems (tracking, electronic health, etc.) data collected and status of data processing and location/shipments in the study.
  • In the course of biospecimen handling, follow Good Clinical Practices (GCP) and/or other applicable policies, as necessary.
  • Communicate with participants’ clinical team regarding study participation as indicated by protocol and/or manual of operations.
  • Communicate challenges to the study leadership.
  • Provide recommendations to improve data collection processes to the study leadership.
  • On a regular basis, adjust regular working schedule to provide weekend coverage as needed.
  • Travel between clinic sites for data collection.
  • There may be additional duties assigned as it relates to this position.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials and techniques used in laboratory and research work.
  • Knowledge of research and laboratory equipment appropriate to the area of the assignment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Fluency in English and Spanish
  • Must have access to reliable transportation and possess a valid driver’s license upon hire.

Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Three years of related laboratory or field research experience; OR,any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

  • Ability to work both independently and with a team, resolving issues with a positive outcome.
  • High level of integrity, ethics and professionalism.
