Position Summary

The Department of Religious Studies and Classics at the University of Arizona is seeking to fill a tenure-track assistant professor position in Religion, Science, and Health. We seek a dynamic scholar and educator rooted in the academic field of Religious Studies, who will contribute to the nonsectarian, land-grant, and inclusive excellence mission of the University of Arizona through rigorous humanities-based research, teaching, and outreach.

The successful candidate will be a core faculty member in the department’s undergraduate track “Religious Studies for Health Professionals,” and will be proactive in building interdisciplinary collaborations between the UA College of Humanities (where the Religious Studies and Classics Department is housed) and units in the UA Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, Science, and others.

The area of research specialty within Religion, Science, and Health is open, but areas of interest include critical health studies; critical body studies; critical race studies; ethnic studies; history of medicine; history of religion and science; religion and psychology/psychiatry; gender, women’s, and sexuality studies; environmental studies; technology studies; artificial intelligence; and others. Candidates prepared to teach courses on Religious Studies theories and methods are especially encouraged to apply.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Maintain an active research and publication agenda.
  • Teach two courses per semester based on program needs, and contribute to mentoring students including those from underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Teach lower and upper division courses in a broad range of topics related to area of expertise.
  • Participate in outreach and contribute to Departmental, College and University service.
  • Participate in curriculum development and program building.
  • Actively recruit and mentor Religious Studies majors and minors.
  • Help to expand collaborations with community partners.
  • Faculty are expected to contribute actively to University of Arizona initiatives focused on fostering diversity and inclusive excellence, enhancing student engagement, and mentoring students including those from underrepresented backgrounds.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Religious Studies or closely related field in hand by August 1, 2018.
  • Excellent record of college-level teaching, including demonstrated record or promise of teaching excellence in both large courses as well as smaller upper-level courses.
  • Proven record or demonstrable capacity and promise for research, scholarly publishing and professional activity at the level required by a research-I university.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience and/or interest in curriculum development, program building, and interdisciplinary collaborations.
  • Background or familiarity with Health Humanities, including humanities-oriented approaches to science/medicine/health studies.
  • Demonstrated interest and excellence in online/hybrid teaching and digital humanities.
  • Experience using innovative teaching methods and/or curricular design to effectively engage a diverse student body.
