General Position Summary:

The University of Arizona College of Science is seeking a motivated and goal-oriented professional to join the Dean and Senior Director of Development for the College of Science and representatives of the University Development Program (UDP) in supporting our efforts to significantly increase philanthropic support and have a positive impact on achieving strategic growth for the college. The Director of Development will lead, direct and manage development activities of the College of Science as part of the college’s development team. The Director of Development works directly with major gift prospects of the College of Science to secure gifts of $25,000 or more to further the goals and objectives of the College of Science.

The Director of Development will gain an in-depth understanding of the College’s donors and prospective donor pools, as well as the school’s overall fundraising processes, strategies and goals. The person in this role is expected to work collaboratively with all members of the College of Science Development and Administrative team, Department Heads and Directors, and other University of Arizona Foundation (UAF) and University of Arizona personnel as appropriate. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to create and sustain personal relationships. The position requires travel on a regular basis throughout Arizona and other regions including overnight stays, in addition to work on evenings and/or weekends as necessary to cultivate and solicit donor prospects.

This position is jointly managed by the College of Science and the University Development Program (UDP), which is managed under contract by The University of Arizona Foundation (UAF.)

Supervisory Responsibility:
May supervise an Associate Director of Development.

Work Environment:
Position requires travel on a regular basis throughout Arizona and other regions including overnight stays.
Director of Development will be required to work evenings and/or weekends as necessary to cultivate and solicit donor prospects.

Duties & Responsibilities

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:

• Actively works with the Dean and Sr. Director of Development for the College of Science and President of the University of Arizona Foundation or designee on all matters related to development activities within the College.
• Develop and manage a portfolio of 80-120 donors/prospects.
• After an initial 3- to 6-month on-boarding period, execute an agreed upon metric of 100+ current or prospect donor visits and presentation of 20+ proposals per year, with an expectation of $1M+ raised after the initial on-boarding period (with incremental increases after the first year).
• Maintain up-to-date donor/prospect portfolio, including contact reports and proposals.
• Develop and execute strategic, personalized cultivation, solicitation and stewardship plans for assigned major donors and prospects (individual, corporate, and foundation) through personal visits, letters, phone calls, email and other methods.
• Actively work with the Dean and Department Heads in the College of Science in expanding, cultivating and growing philanthropic support through their advisory boards and alumni.
• Participate with the Dean and Department Heads in the College of Science in the strategic planning of new projects and initiatives.
• Is expected to devote 80 percent effort to major gift fundraising and 20 percent to management and administrative tasks.
• Develop an annual report and fund-raising plans with specific goals.
• Develop and oversee the creation of materials in support of fundraising efforts in support of College initiatives.
• Partner with and effectively utilize the development professionals and resources of the UA Foundation.
• Work effectively as part of the greater University Development Program (UDP) as defined in the Development Services and Asset Management Agreement between the University of Arizona and the University of Arizona Foundation.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Ability to create and lead comprehensive fundraising campaigns.
• Ability to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major gift donors.
• Ability to build boards and committee structures.
• Ability to write successful proposals, grants, and reports.
• Excellent writing and communication skills.
• Ability to establish and maintain powerful relationships.
• Ability to translate technical scientific information into lay language for potential donors.
• Ability to understand and work with budgetary procedures and policies.
• Ability to motivate and manage individuals for maximum performance.
• Ability to work with academic and administration staff members.
• Knowledge of planned giving techniques and the programs available to implement such gifts.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university program.
• Three to five (3-5) years of development experience or appropriate transferable skills..
• Demonstrated knowledge of development and fundraising principles and procedures, with emphasis on cultivating and closing major gifts.
• Experience working with volunteers, faculty, staff and students.
• A valid driver’s license is required upon employment and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of the sciences.
• Demonstrated success in planning, organizing, and managing fundraising campaigns.
• Proficiency in Raiser’s Edge or equivalent fundraising database.
• Demonstrated event planning experience.
• Higher education experience is highly preferred.
