Position Summary

University Information Technology Services, within the University of Arizona, is accepting applications for a Network Engineering Architect.

Under administrative direction, this position is responsible for designing and recommending solutions for telecommunications and data networks, and supporting, and maintaining the UA’s and Sun Corridor network environments. The successful candidate will be tasked with installation and configuration of network elements, with providing support necessary to ensure maximum availability, as well as leading technology workers in executing and completing assignments/projects. The successful candidate will utilize industry best practices to provide guidance and expertise related to network, both internally and to network managers in other UA departments.

Incumbent will be responsible for participating in a 24×7 on-call for infrastructure emergencies.

Duties & Responsibilities

This is not intended to be a comprehensive list of duties, but rather a representative sample illustrating the type of work:

  • Support customer/business requirements with the design, development, testing, evaluation, acquisition and operation of computer networks and ensure network architecture and capacity meets present and future needs.
  • Architect and design unified networking campus road maps utilizing extensive knowledge and experience of Route/Switch, Security, Wireless and VOIP networking concepts; responsible for integrating complex networking design architectures into a seamless enterprise model; provide technical guidance and networking architectural solutions for all stakeholders and partners as required.
  • Works with administration/researchers and non-University users to define, adapt, develop, and implement technology hardware and software solutions to the research, communications and security needs of the department.
  • Analyzes requests for communications network and security systems to determine feasibility, cost, equipment needs and time required; conducts needs analysis, evaluates new hardware and software for completeness and compatibility with existing systems and recommends systems for purchase, conducts simulations of proposed solutions; provides cost-benefit analysis.
  • Develops test, implementation, and project plans to ensure deliverables are being achieved on time and within budget.
  • Manages projects related to applications (networking, software, implementation, and security) to ensure effective and efficient operations.
  • Recommends operational, policy and procedural changes. Develops and writes procedures for installation, use, or troubleshooting of communication hardware and software, to track, project, or report network availability, reliability, capacity, or utilization. Develops functional requirements/specifications for networked computers/equipment to ensure appropriate operating procedures and documentation.
  • Ensures network stability and availability through the use of monitoring and reporting tools. Analyzes performance metrics to detect problems, identify inefficient use of computer resources or ensure optimal performance of the production network, and perform capacity planning. Evaluate, select, install and configure new networking tools, and the associated processes and procedures necessary to ensure maximum availability.
  • Maintains network and security infrastructure, hardware, software, services and configuration including upgrades. Proactively provides recommendations for software versions and code upgrades. Installs, tests and optimizes network components and services. Develops and recommends network security measures such as firewalls, network security audits,etc.
  • Performs implementation of new or upgraded systems.
  • Operates communications network facilities, including links, routing and switching systems, security platforms and network monitoring and control facilities.
  • Acts as a subject-matter-expert, providing guidance and consulting services in the areas of network infrastructure technologies to all business functions, for the purpose of designing and implementing networking solutions.
  • Leads and guides technical staff on large/complex projects. Coordinates all aspects of the project; works with the operations, estimators, customers and maintenance staff on design, hardware and software matters. Interfaces with NOC personnel, technicians, network managers and IT personnel, and provides them with support and training when needed.
  • Provides exceptional customer service by keeping in mind customer needs at all times, giving prompt response, consistent follow up, and fast turn-around on problem resolution.
  • Solves the most complex network support problems; communicates with vendors as necessary; acts as a top-tier escalation point for networking outage and resolution.
  • Participates in the formulation of the annual budget and monitors and controls ongoing operating budget.
  • Participates in an on-call rotation for network and security emergencies.
  • Assumes and performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge and prior experience of current high-speed communications network hardware, software and protocols such as: EIGRP, BGP, HSRP, OSPF, IPv6, VRF, MPLS, etc.
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience configuring and supporting Cisco networking and security hardware to include: ASA, FirewPower, ASR 1004, ASR 9010, Nexus 5000 and 7000 series, Catalyst 6500, 6800, 4500, 3750, ME3600X, and 3560 series switches in a large production environment.
  • Understanding of network monitoring and reporting tools and metrics.
  • Ability to analyze network performance metrics to ensure optimal performance of the production network.
  • Demonstrated experience with customer focused problem solving.
  • Skill in effectively communicating technical subjects both orally and in writing.
  • Possesses a desire to learn and share information within a strong team environment.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Communications System Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field, AND five years of experience with high speed circuit or packet switched data networks; OR Expert-level (10 years) experience in fields of network design, engineering/implementation, operation, and maintenance; OR any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Current CCIE designation and hands on Internet Service Provider (ISP) engineering.
