Position Summary

University Information Technology Services, within the University of Arizona, is accepting applications for a Communications Network Analyst. This position is responsible for installing, supporting, and maintaining the UA’s network environment. The successful candidate will be tasked with installation and configuration of network elements as well as providing support necessary to ensure maximum availability. The candidate will utilize industry best practices to provide guidance and expertise related to network, both internally and to network managers in other UA departments.

Incumbent will be responsible for participating in a 24×7 on-call for infrastructure emergencies.

Duties & Responsibilities

This is not intended to be a comprehensive list of duties, but rather a representative sample illustrating the type of work:

  • Operates communications network facilities, including links, routing and switching systems, and network monitoring and control facilities. Monitors network use.
  • Analyzes and troubleshoots network systems and supports users in resolving network malfunctions. Coordinates activities with other technical staff.
  • Maintains network infrastructure, hardware, software, services and configuration including hardware and software upgrades. Installs and tests network components and services.
  • Creates and maintains required documentation regarding network hardware and software installation and maintenance.
  • Instructs and assists new users in accessing network systems.
  • Ensures that all Remedy tickets and TMIS work orders are done in a timely manner.
  • Ensures network stability and availability through the use of monitoring and reporting tools.
  • Analyzes performance metrics to ensure optimal performance of the production network.
  • Acts as primary responder to Tier-2 network requests such as switch/router changes and triaging potential network events.
  • Interfaces with NOC personnel, technicians, network managers and IT personnel, and provides them with support and training when needed.
  • Participates as a team member on network development projects, in the planning, installation and operation of network hardware, software and control elements of the network.
  • Participates in the implementation of different network protocols like EIGRP, HSRP, spanning-tree, as well as new network technology such as VRF and MPLS.
  • Participates in an on-call rotation for network and security emergencies.
  • Assumes and performs other duties and responsibilities not specifically outlined herein, but which are logically and properly inherent to the position.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of the principles, operation and capabilities of current high-speed communications network hardware, software and protocols.
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience configuring and supporting Cisco networking hardware to include: Catalyst 6500, 6800, 4500, 3750, ME3600X, and 3560 series switches in a large production environment.
  • Understanding of network monitoring and reporting tools and metrics.
  • Ability to analyze network performance metrics to ensure optimal performance of the production network.
  • Skill in effectively communicating technical subjects both orally and in writing.
  • Possesses a desire to learn and share information within a strong team environment.

Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Three years of experience installing, operating or maintaining communications network hardware or software; OR, Associates degree in Computer Information Technology or related field AND two years of experience installing, operating or maintaining communications network hardware or software; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications System Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field, AND one year of experience with high speed circuit or packet switched data networks.
  • Experience with communication system design, implementation, operation or maintenance experience which includes experience with high speed circuit or packet switched data networks.
  • Experience implementing and supporting Cisco networking environment, preferably in a higher education setting.
