Position Summary

University Information Technology Services, within the University of Arizona, is accepting applications for the position of Systems Administrator, Senior. The successful candidate will work as part of the Office of Student Computer Resources (OSCR) and will serve in both maintaining the current computer systems and creating the next. The position involves analyzing, installing, configuring and maintaining hardware/software across several computer labs, with emphasis on Mac OS. The position also will look forward into new technology, including but not limited to virtual computing labs.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Monitors and maintains availability, performance and security of systems software, hardware and related applications.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and resolves complex technical issues with computer hardware and software.
  • Installs, configures, and performs routine maintenance on systems hardware and software including servers and operating systems, in both Windows and Mac OS, with an emphasis on Mac OS.
  • Monitors for updates to installed software and upgrades the computer images regularly, during off hours.
  • Recommends, configures and installs new computer hardware, per refresh schedule.
  • Tests systems and applications software including the impact of software updates and patches.
  • Troubleshoots hardware and software systems. Optimizes systems performance.
  • Conducts research of current and emerging computing technologies. Identifies potential applications for emerging technology in current environment.
  • Creates pilot programs to evaluate new technology. Presents recommendations for full-scale implementation.
  • Conducts user software needs analysis and makes recommendations for enhancements and continued improvement.
  • Creates virtual lab access for on-line students.
  • Identifies and creates process improvements, including writing scripts to increase automation.
  • Implements and monitors computer security and quality assurance procedures and maintains associated required documentation.
  • Implements computer software and hardware licensing, warranty and vendor service agreements. Applies system updates and configuration changes.
  • Works with other OSCR system admin, to cross-train and provide backup ability for each other’s duties.
  • Collaborates with other departments IT staff, for cross-training and cross-support.
  • May manage projects of limited scope or portions of large and/or complex projects. May guide technical staff on a project basis.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of the theory, principles and practices in systems administration and network systems administration.
  • Knowledge of workstation and network support tools, such as NetSupportSchool, Deep Freeze, Apple Remote Desktop, DeployStudio, ActiveDirectory, Group Policy, and other back-end software.
  • Knowledge of scripting tools; for example, PowerShell, Python, or Bash.
  • Skill in analyzing, troubleshooting, and resolving computer hardware and software problems.
  • Skill in researching new technologies and identifying potential uses for it.
  • Skill in implementing projects, from concept to full execution.
  • Skill in working independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Must be available and willing to work extended and/or alternative hours as needed for roll-outs, system upgrades, problem remediation, etc.

Five years of progressively responsible system administration and/or programming experience including the installation, testing and maintenance of hardware, operating and applications systems and utilities; OR Associate’s degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Information Technology or related field AND four years of progressively responsible system administration and/or programming experience including the installation, testing and maintenance of hardware, operating and applications systems and utilities; OR, Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Information Technology or related field AND two years of progressively responsible system administration and/or programming experience including the installation, testing and maintenance of hardware, operating and applications systems and utilities; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting Mac OS computers, using Apple Remote Desktop and other technologies.
  • Experience with virtual machines, virtual desktops and/or virtual delivery of applications.
