Position Summary

Financial Management Services (FMS) within University Information Technology Services (UITS) is seeking to add a seasoned Accountant to our team. FMS provides business and human resources related support to the Office of the VP for Information Strategy and University Libraries, including UITS, amounting to a combined footprint of $50+ million in expenditures and approximately 250 employees. The units within this organization offer a wide range of information technology services to support the mission of The University of Arizona.

The successful candidate will perform a broad range of activities, spanning the full spectrum of University business operations. Emphasis will largely focus on our reconciliation and quality assurance processes. FMS will rely heavily on the incumbent to review, analyze, and complete account clean-up and expense allocation activities. Given this emphasis, the incumbent will also play a key role in our service costing and applicable rate study efforts. In addition, assistance with UAccess Budget transactions will be needed. Therefore, proficiency in handling a wide range of University of Arizona transactions will be required.

Duties & Responsibilities

The following are likely examples and should not be viewed as limitations of scope:

  • Reviews transactions and initiates corrections, as needed.
  • Leads monthly account reconciliation activities.
  • Provides assistance in generating appropriate University transaction vehicle for procurement of goods and services, and/or make payment to vendors and contractors.
  • Generates appropriate transaction documents for procurement and accounts receivable activities.
  • Assists with Local Fund Budget activities for auxiliary services.
  • Provides primary assistance with service costing and rate study efforts.
  • Completes internal and University asset reporting exercises.
  • Prepares standard accounting reports and statements and also non-standard reports and statements, such as detailed cost and financial analysis, forecasts and projections reflecting interrelationships of accounting data; prepares or assists in preparation of special accounting studies.
  • Interprets data and points out trends or deviations from standards.
  • Identifies informational needs of management and revises or refines account structures or data accordingly.
  • Prepares intricate journal entries, maintains complex ledgers, prepares detailed cost accounting information and reconciles and analyzes reports and ledgers.
  • Decides proper handling of financial transactions; approves transactions within designated limits.
  • Provides solutions to problems presented by lower level staff and recommends changes to accounting system, methods or procedures to management, utilizing knowledge of accounting principles and practices.
  • Interprets accounting data, analyzes reports and recommends action to be taken.
  • Advises and counsels on complex accounting matters to department and/or University staff.
  • Implements changes in procedures affecting assigned function.
  • Monitors compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and University regulations.
  • Keeps informed by researching and evaluating appropriate professional and related legal literature as assigned.

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related area with accounting course work AND one year of professional accounting experience; OR, five years of progressively responsible and diverse accounting experience and course work, which includes at least one year of professional accounting, in which a broad exposure to all areas of accounting and accounting principles, practices and procedures was acquired; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge and experience using UAccess systems: Employee, Financials, Budget, and Analytics.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Advanced skill in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
