The Department of Planning, Design & Construction (PDC) creates an outstanding campus environment through excellent planning, design and construction of facilities, and the management of campus real estate and space portfolios. We are the liaison between University departments and outside design, engineering and construction firms.

The Senior Architect position is an integral part of the team of architects, engineers, project managers, accountants and administrative support which successfully manages one of the largest University building programs in the country. Planning, Design & Construction is seeking a Senior Architect to join our innovative staff on a wide variety of challenging projects involving diverse building types.

The successful candidate will provide project management expertise to efficiently and cost effectively develop, manage and coordinate design and/or construction projects consistent with the mission and goals of PDC.

The selected candidate is expected to be registered as an Architect in the State of Arizona or have the ability to become registered within 3 months of their start date.

Duties & Responsibilities

Effective Project Leadership:

  • Ensure the quality and success of projects by managing consultants’ design and recommend design modifications as required in the best interest of the University of Arizona.
  • Demonstrate successful project leadership by defining, developing and meeting project requirements, goals, budget, and schedule.
  • Take ownership and be the champion of assigned projects. Effectively lead project teams of design professionals, facility users, and various University departments by exemplifying high standards.
  • Provide organization, leadership, and coordination to the project team.
  • Facilitate and seek fair, consensual resolutions to project challenges, issues and conflicts.

Facilitate Project Coordination and Communication:

  • Serve as project representative and provide appropriate opportunities to facilitate input from project delivery teams and other stakeholders.
  • Coordinate and communicate project related issues and responses.
  • Report current status and coordinate future milestones of projects to all relevant stakeholders and supervisors.
  • Communicate and coordinate effectively with project delivery teams and facility users to develop project scope, design, budget, and schedule requirements that meet user needs and are in accordance with Arizona Board of Regents, University of Arizona and Planning, Design & Construction policies, guidelines and procedures.
  • Assist Facilities Project Managers in resolution of design issues during construction.

Provide Project Review and Management:

  • Review project documentation to ensure project requirements, quality of design, compliance with University design standards, and appropriate codes and standards.
  • Ensure quality and success of design and construction by management of design and/or construction team, review of construction documents, and diligent observation of work.
  • Effectively negotiate contracts, agreements and related documents. Provide timely and accurate management of documents and processes.

Special Assignments and Committees:

  • Contribute positive input to efforts such as Search Committees and Process Improvement Teams.
  • Assist in maintenance of University’s Design Standards.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Ability to work as a cooperative team player and communicate effectively with a diverse group.
  • Demonstrated experience in successful team leadership and management.
  • Knowledge and experience in design and construction administration issues and procedures.
Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or related field AND five years of architectural experience (including design project management); OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education; AND, registration as an Architect in the State of Arizona or the ability to become registered within 3 months of start date.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Project management experience as an owner’s representative.
  • Experience delivering a project while working with or for a public entity.
  • Experience managing design projects in an educational environment that would include design and construction of new buildings and renovation of existing buildings, such as: classrooms, laboratories (wet and dry), residence halls, athletic facilities, student unions and medical facilities.
  • Demonstrated skill and experience in contract negotiation and administration.
  • Skill and experience with Construction Manager @ Risk and Design/Build project delivery methods.
  • Knowledge of sustainable design, particularly USGBC LEED criteria.
