Position Summary

The BIO5 Institute is seeking highly motivated candidates for the full-time position of Postdoctoral Research Associate I in the Laboratory of Dr. Felicia Goodrum studying complex virus-host interactions important to human cytomegalovirus persistence. BIO5 transcends traditional research models by promoting intensive interdisciplinary collaboration with individuals from many departments and colleges within the University of Arizona. BIO5 is dedicated to stimulating leading-edge interdisciplinary research in order to translate research into real-world applications in the fields of medicine and agriculture. The BIO5 Institute is committed to training the next generation of scientists as well as increasing scientific knowledge throughout society.

The successful Postdoctoral candidate will work in a group led by the Principal Investigator, Dr. Felicia Goodrum, and interact closely with co-collaborators in a highly diversified interdisciplinary setting. The Goodrum Lab is seeking a skilled molecular biologist/biochemist/virologist with interests and experience in one or more of the fields of virology, molecular biology, cell signaling, and protein biochemistry. The successful applicant will join a motivated and highly collaborative team working to understand viral and cellular mechanisms of persistence. The laboratory’s approach to understanding the molecular mechanisms of viral persistence combines sophisticated primary hematopoietic, fibroblast and endothelial cell models, molecular virology and recombinogenic engineering to identify viral genes and host targets that contribute to viral persistence. Latent viral coexistence is one of the least understood phenomena in virology, but one critically important to understanding the impact of latent viruses on our biology and viral pathogenesis.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Develop and lead a research project in close collaboration with the PI and other lab members.
• Present findings at lab meetings, work in progress meetings, and national/international conferences.
• Innovate new areas of inquiry.
• Mentor junior lab members and contribute to an overall collaborative and energetic environment for scientific inquiry.
• Maintain detailed records of experimental plans and findings.
• Apply for independent funding and contribute to grant proposals submitted by the PI.
• Additional duties may be assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Minimum Qualifications

• PhD or MD in molecular or cellular biology, genetics, immunology, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, or related field by time of hire.
• Will consider candidate who is “ABD” (all but dissertation/graduated) if all coursework is completed and final oral examination has been passed, such that the candidate is just awaiting degree conferral.
• Demonstrated ability to define, investigate and solve complex problems in biomedical research using established techniques and approaches, and to devise and extend new technologies to obtain answers to complex and difficult scientific questions.
• Skilled in molecular biologist/biochemist/virologist with interests and experience in one or more of the fields of virology, molecular biology, cell signaling, and protein biochemistry.
• Excellent organizational/record-keeping skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Self-motivated and enthusiastic for science.

Preferred Qualifications

• Molecular biology experience preferred: DNA, RNA, protein, cell and tissue isolation and purification’s, cell culture, microarray, western and northern blotting, quantitative PCR and RT-PCR, and fluorescent microscopy.
• Experience in proteomics or cell signaling is an advantage.
