Position Summary

University of Arizona Health Sciences (UAHS) is seeking Clinical Research Coordinators who will function as Recruitment and Retention Specialists to support a new federally funded 5-year grant, the Precision Medicine Initiative (PMI) Cohort Program.

Must be willing to be trained in phlebotomy.

Jointly between the University of Arizona and its clinical partner Banner Health, these activities are part of a national initiative which will contribute significantly to the development of a research cohort that will engage a million or more Americans who volunteer their health data over many years to improve health outcomes, fuel the development of new treatments for disease, and catalyze a new era of data-based and more precise preventive care and medical treatment.

The Recruitment Specialists will work under the supervision of the Associate Director of Clinical Research Operations to provide project coordination and clinical research daily operations for this multi-site study to ensure successful implementation of and adherence to the clinical research protocol and national and local milestones regarding planning, administration, timeline management, enrollment, participant engagement, data collection, and reporting.

The selected individuals will be responsible for clinical research operations including recruitment, informed consent, collection of patient reported data, bio-specimen collection, compliance with study procedures, data collection and documentation, and work closely with the study team and clinical partners. This position will work closely with national efforts to support retention of cohort participants. University of Arizona Health Sciences seeks candidates who will demonstrate competence in clinical research.

These positions will be located at various Banner facilities in the greater Phoenix area.

Duties & Responsibilities

Study Conduct/ Clinical Research Practice:

  • Work with study team as needed to define specimen collection, processing and storage procedures.
  • Handle, process, and ship specimens (blood, tissue, etc.) per study guidelines and safety regulations; ensures specimens are properly logged, handled and stored.
  • Maintain all records and files required by regulatory agencies and sponsors.

Regulatory Compliance and Documentation

  • Prepare, submit & maintain all regulatory submissions (proposed new studies, annual review, amendments, & adverse events) accurately & within a timely manner to all collaborative parties.
  • Prepare, plan, & participate in all monitor visits, audits, & quality reviews (internal & external) in a professional manner.
  • Maintain up-to-date & accurate written & electronic records & files to support clinical research activities.

Recruitment/Enrollment/Retention:

  • Determine best method/s to identify potential participants for research protocol (advertisements, chart reviews, monitoring of clinic schedule, etc.) and prepare accordingly.
  • Conduct, review and execute informed consent process according to GCP and UA procedures and other applicable rules, regulations and policies.
  • Communicate with participants’ clinical team regarding study participation.

Communication:

  • Compose clear, precise and detailed correspondence.
  • Document, organize and maintain all correspondence.
  • Communicate study related issues to investigators, sponsors, coordinating centers, study coordinators, clinical and research teams, managers and other institutions.

Data Management:

  • Create, complete and review CRFs in consultation with other team members, as needed, using existing study data information to promote efficient data collection and data entry.
  • Perform data cleaning procedures and quality checks to ensure accuracy of data
  • Prepare and review reports, tables, and listings.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associates degree and three (3) years direct clinical research experience; OR
  • Medical Assistant/Lab Technician certification and (3) years direct clinical research experience; OR
  • RN, LPN, LVN and two (2) years of direct clinical or medical laboratory experience; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree and one (1) year direct clinical research experience; OR
  • CRA, CCRA Certification


  • Previous experience with electronic medical records.
  • Previous experience managing, organizing and entering patient data in various databases.
  • Willing to be trained in phlebotomy.
  • Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license with two years of driving experience and reliable transportation with proper Arizona registration and vehicle insurance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Six (6) years’ experience in clinical research and training; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment and two years related research experience (Health or biological sciences related field).
  • Fluent in speaking, reading and writing Spanish.
  • Demonstrated experience in Phlebotomy and/or certified Phlebotomist.
