Position Summary

The University of Arizona, University Information Technology Services, Campus Web Services team is seeking an innovative and collaborative professional for the position of Web Operations Specialist, Senior. The Web Operations Specialist, Senior will work in an evolving fast-paced collaborative cross-team environment to help deploy, monitor and maintain systems required for University website availability, performance and security. This individual will analyze, install, configure, integrate and maintain systems related to centrally managed university web sites and web applications.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Work closely with site owners and developers to manage the operations and work flow of the University of Arizona’s centrally managed web hosting environments on both on-premise and cloud-hosted infrastructures.
• Manage the deployment, installation, and configuration of websites.
• Lead security patching and system upgrade efforts, ensuring the sites and servers are secure and performance tuned.
• Migrate sites between on-premise and cloud environments.
• Troubleshoot, test, monitor and perform diagnostics and development of automated testing tools. Includes Linux admin troubleshooting and limited PHP development.
• Manage site backups/archives and support recovery operations as needed.
• Provide client support and interact with the application developers, vendors, clients, UNIX team, Cloud Enterprise Team and cloud service providers, while leading student IT workers to ensure sites are running smoothly and to also identify any server specific problems which are affecting the applications.
• Optimize change management processes using tools such as GitHub/BitBucket, branching strategies and continuous integration.
• Manage SSL certificates.
• Innovate methodologies to improve web hosting services.
• Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Skills & Ability:
• Skill in providing information technology related customer service to users having varying levels of technical expertise.
• Skill in writing technical documentation.
• Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Experience with:
• Installation, integration, and support of LAMP stack applications and underlying components, e.g. Apache, PHP, MySQL, Drupal, and/or Wordpress.
• Systems development using scripting languages, e.g., Bash, Ruby, Python, Perl.

Knowledge of:
• Software version control tools, e.g. Git, Subversion.
• Current IT security practices and protocols.
• Web application performance and scalability best practices.

Minimum Qualifications

• Five years of progressive experience in web development and/or systems administration; OR, Associate’s degree in Information Technology or a related area AND four years of progressive experience in web development and/or systems administration; OR, Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or a related area AND two years of progressive experience in web development and/or systems administration; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with:
• Hosting, maintenance and support of multiple Drupal websites and associated applications and tools, e.g. Drush, rsync, dslm, Aegir.
• Performance and scalability optimization of high availability web applications and associated technologies, e.g. Varnish, HAproxy, NFS, Memcache, and/or Redis.

Familiarity with:
• Cloud deployment technologies, e.g. AWS, Azure, OpenStack.
• Web application hosting platforms, e.g. Acquia, Pantheon, cPanel, Plesk, Heroku.
• Performance monitoring tools, e.g. New Relic APM.
• Configuration management tools, e.g. Ansible, Puppet, Chef, Salt.
• Containerization technologies, e.g. Docker, Kubernetes.
• Continuous integration and delivery tools, e.g. Jenkins, Travis CI.
• Agile development management tools and processes, e.g. Atlassian JIRA, Redmine.

Knowledge of:
• Agile and Lean theory, method, and practices.
• DevOps practices and approaches.
