Position Summary

University Information Technology Services, within The University of Arizona, is accepting applications for the position of Communications Network Analyst, Principal. This position is responsible for installing, supporting, and maintaining the UA’s network environment. The successful candidate will be tasked with installation and configuration of network elements as well as with providing support necessary to ensure maximum availability. The candidate will utilize industry best practices to provide guidance and expertise related to network, both internally and to network managers in other UA departments.
Incumbent will be responsible for participating in a 24×7 on-call for infrastructure emergencies.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Analyzes requests for communications network and security systems to determine feasibility cost, equipment needs and time required. Participates in cost-benefit analysis. Implements new or upgraded systems.
• Participates in network and security planning, design and development projects; evaluates existing resources, conducts needs analysis, researches hardware and software alternatives and conducts simulations of proposed solutions.
• Evaluates new hardware and software for completeness and compatibility with existing systems and recommends systems for purchase. Recommends operational, policy and procedural changes.
• Operates communications network facilities, including links, routing and switching systems, security platforms and network monitoring and control facilities.
• Ensure network stability and availability through the use of monitoring and reporting tools. Analyzes performance metrics to ensure optimal performance of the production network. Evaluate, select, install and configure new networking tools, and the associated processes and procedures necessary to ensure maximum availability.
• Maintains network and security infrastructure, hardware, software, services and configuration including upgrades. Proactively provide recommendation for software versions and code upgrades. Installs tests and optimizes network components and services.
• Maintains project documentation regarding network and secuirty hardware and software installation and maintenance.
• Leads and guides technical staff on large/complex projects. Coordinates with the operations, estimators, customers and maintenance staffs on design, hardware and software matters. Interface with NOC personnel, technicians, network managers and IT personnel, and provide them with support and training when needed.
• Provide exceptional customer service by keeping in mind customer needs at all times, giving prompt response, consistent follow up, and fast turn-around on problem resolution.
• Act as a Tier 3 support for Remedy tickets, TMIS work orders and other escalated issues when needed.
• Participate in an on-call rotation for network and security emergencies.
• Assume and perform other duties and responsibilities not specifically outlined herein, but which are logically and properly inherent to the position

Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Six years of progressively responsible experience designing, developing, and maintaining communications networks; OR, an Associate’s degree in Management Information Systems or a related field AND five years of progressively responsible experience designing, developing, and maintaining communications networks; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience implementing and supporting Cisco networking environment, preferably in a higher education setting
• Knowledge and prior experience of current high-speed communications network hardware, software and protocols such as: EIGRP, BGP, HSRP, OSPF for IPv6, as well as new network technology such as VRF and MPLS
• Knowledge and hands-on experience configuring and supporting Cisco networking and security hardware to include: ASA, FirewPower, ASR 1004, ASR 9010, Nexus 5000 and 7000 series, Catalyst 6500, 6800, 4500, 3750, ME3600X, and 3560 series switches in a large production environment
• Understanding of network monitoring and reporting tools and metrics
• Ability to analyze network performance metrics to ensure optimal performance of the production network
• Demonstrated experience with customer focused problem solving
• Skill in effectively communicating technical subjects both orally and in writing
• Possesses a desire to learn and share information within a strong team environment.
