Position Summary

The University of Arizona is seeking Research Technicians to provide support for clinical specimen for and sample processing for the Center for Disparities in Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism. The Research Technicians will be responsible for collecting, logging, processing, and assuring proper transportation of biospecimens to the centers biobank using standardized protocols and consumables.

The successful candidates will report to the center administrator and senior clinical research coordinator will work closely with the center’s research staff and leadership of the to advance the goals of the University of Arizona Center for Disparities in Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism, with a focus on the development, promotion, and advancement of research, education, and service. This position will work closely with Spanish and English speaking populations.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Work closely with the Clinical Research Coordinator, Sr., and Recruitment and Retention Specialist to support the activities of all team members.
  • Transport and set-up lab/data collection kits at clinical sites.
  • Collect and label samples, and as instructed, and deliver or process samples in accordance with the protocol, manual of operations, standard operating procedure (SOP) or other work instruction set.
  • Ensure specimens are properly logged, handled, and stored.
  • Conduct data entry to ensure accuracy, quality and compliance of data collection.
  • Document in applicable systems (tracking, electronic health, etc.) data collected and status of data processing and location/shipments in the study.
  • Assist other staff members and coordinators to implement studies.
  • Operate standard laboratory and research study equipment.
  • In the course of biospecimen handling, follow Good Clinical Practices (GCP), Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) processes, UAHS and Banner procedures and/or other applicable policies, as necessary.
  • Communicate with participants’ clinical team regarding study participation as indicated by protocol and/or manual of operations.
  • Follow direction of research staff or other involved in the clinical research project work.
  • Communicate challenges to the study leadership.
  • Provide recommendations to improve data collection processes to the study leadership.
  • On a regular basis, adjust regular working schedule to provide weekend coverage as needed.
  • Travel between clinic sites for data collection and recruitment purposes.
  • There may be additional duties assigned as it relates to this position.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Fluent in English and Spanish.
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of clinical research.
  • Knowledge of modern research methods: data collection and analysis.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Fluency in English and Spanish.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation and possess a valid driver’s license upon hire.
Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Four years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices Training (e.g., CITI online program), CLIA, and other applicable regulations.
  • Ability to follow strict protocols and standard operating procedures.
  • Significant attention to detail for data entry.
  • Ability to work both independently and with a team, resolving issues with a positive outcome.
  • High level of integrity, ethics and professionalism.
  • Strong communication and computer skills.
