Position Summary

Reporting to the University Development Program and assigned to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the Associate Director of Development is responsible for acquiring major gifts ($25,000+) in support of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. This position is jointly managed by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the University Development Program (UDP), which is managed under contract by The University of Arizona Foundation (UAF.)

Duties & Responsibilities

• Develops and prepares background information for visits using from Raiser’s Edge (RE) software and other appropriate data sources.
• Plans, coordinates, and schedules personal visits weekly with CALS donor prospects.
• Qualifies major gift donors and prospects.
• Develops a personalized strategy for the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of each assigned prospect and donor.
• Builds a portfolio of 50-75 prospects.
• Focuses on major gifts at the $25,000 level.
• Works with UAF GIFT Center on private foundation and corporate grants.
• Coordinates with UAF Gift Planning on bequests and legacy giving.
• Transitions prospects with significant capacity to other CALS development officers in consultation with the Senior Director.
• Maintains contact with individual key College alumni and friends by phone, letter, email, and personal visits.
• In coordination with the UDP’s Annual Fund Office, manages CALS crowdfunding and annual giving appeals.
• Attends special activities for the college with alumni, donors & friends.
• Assists the Senior Director in preparing, implementing & following-up with UA, UDP, and CALS fundraising initiatives.
• Coordinates department communications (newsletters, brochures, website, etc.) with CALS Executive Director, Branding and Marketing.
• Performs other duties assigned by the Senior Director of Development, Alumni, Advocacy, and Corporate Relations.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Excellent writing, speaking, interviewing, and listening skills (demonstrated competence in the English language and grammar).
• Excellent time management and organizational skills.
• Excellent initiative and ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
• Working knowledge of the ways donors can make charitable gifts, including cash, appreciated securities, real and personal property, charitable remainder trusts, bequests in a will or living trust, charitable gift annuities, etc.
• Ability to effectively communicate the University of Arizona mission, strategic plan, and case for philanthropic support.
• Ability to build and maintain productive relationships with donors, development colleagues, and UA faculty and staff members.
• Ability to inspire cooperation and participation.
• Ability to make cold calls and other introductory contacts to get appointments with prospects.
• Ability to make good decisions and to exercise good judgment and discretion.
• Ability to maintain donor confidentiality.
• Ability to understand and follow UA and UAF policies and procedures.
• Ability to understand and work within budgetary restrictions.
• Ability to operate basic office equipment (telephone, computer, printer, copier, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree AND two (2) years of successful experience in charitable gifts fundraising and development programs or in a related occupation (e.g., sales, public relations, communications).
• Outstanding interpersonal/relationship skills.
• Knowledge of computer programs such as excel, word, outlook, etc.
• Excellent oral and written communication.
• Skills in organizing the work of self and others.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license upon employment.
• Development professionals must have personal attributes important for effectively representing the University of Arizona and the UDP, including honesty, integrity, a professional presence, an amiable and engaging personality, excellent interpersonal and conversation skills, positive energy, a “can-do” attitude, a strong work ethic, and the drive to succeed and surpass articulated success metrics.

Preferred Qualifications

• 3-5 years of development experience in higher education.
• Track record of major gift success.
• Knowledge of issues pertaining to agriculture and life sciences.
• Knowledge of alumni affairs strategies.
• Knowledge of development and fund raising principles and procedures.
• Experience working with volunteers, faculty, staff and students.
• Experience managing communication and marketing programs and special events.
• Knowledge of organizational practice and governance.
• Knowledge of RE fundraising software.
