Position Summary

The University of Arizona Arthritis Center is seeking a Research Specialist to coordinate clinical trials in our Clinical Research Unit (CRU).

The department is seeking an individual who is able to work with diverse students, trainees and colleagues, and who has experience with a variety of teaching methods and curricular perspectives.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Recruit study participants from the rheumatology clinic and the local area; place newspaper, radio, television and poster advertisements.
  • Evaluate potential study participants to ensure they meet study eligibility requirements; instruct study participants concerning research protocol and complete the patient informed consent procedure.
  • Coordinate and conduct study visits according to protocol; perform ECG’s, schedule and/or coordinate required laboratory tests, radiology procedures, exams.
  • Administer oral investigational drug and give patient instructions for administration of IV and SC investigational drug.
  • Process and package laboratory samples for shipment.
  • Assess participants for evidence of drug toxicity, unexpected side effects or other problems and notify principal investigator and research RN.
  • Assist in maintenance of regulatory files.
  • Assist in daily operations of CRU.
  • Develop source documents and other data collection/tracking tools as needed.
  • Keep the clinical trial principal investigator informed of adverse events and serious adverse events.
  • Complete case report forms (CRF), electronic or paper, for each study participant; resolve queries.
  • Coordinate and maintain contact with patients, physicians, pharmaceutical companies, and other related parties to recruit participants, schedule monitor visits, schedule physician coverage.
  • Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to learning about the pathophysiology of autoimmune diseases and their associated treatments.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of the subject discipline.
  • Knowledge of modern research methods, data collection and analysis and skill in their application.
  • Skill in analyzing and evaluating data.
  • Skill in report writing.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Experience performing ECGs.
  • Previous clinical research experience in industry sponsored trials.
Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND two years related research experience; OR, Six years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, changeable and sometimes distracting environment.
  • Ability to function without direct supervision.
  • Demonstrated skill in prioritization and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with basic medical terminology and drugs used to treat common disorders.
  • Fluent in Spanish (written and oral).
  • Phlebotomy skills.
