Position Summary

Biosphere 2 is seeking candidates to fill the position of Instructional Specialist – EOS (Education Outreach Specialist). Successful candidates will utilize knowledge and skills to perform a variety of tasks and duties in support of the Education and Outreach mission of Biosphere 2. Multiple positions are available.

The Biosphere 2 is located north of Tucson – north of the Santa Catalina Mountains.

Biosphere 2 is one of the world’s most unique facilities dedicated to the research and understanding of global scientific issues. The Biosphere 2 facility serves as a laboratory for controlled scientific studies, an arena for scientific discovery and discussion, and a far-reaching provider of public education. Its mission is to serve as a center for research, outreach, teaching and life-long learning about Earth, its living systems, and its place in the universe; to catalyze interdisciplinary thinking and understanding about Earth and its future; to be an adaptive tool for Earth education and outreach to industry, government, and the public; and to distill issues related to Earth systems planning and management for use by policymakers, students and the public.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Develop and facilitate K-12 curriculum and lesson plans.
• Develop and facilitate new education and outreach programs.
• Conduct engaging Biosphere 2 school group tours with enthusiasm and scientific accuracy to diverse audiences while keeping within the parameters of time limits and approved curriculum.
• Routinely check for safety and security issues, take actions to resolve issues when necessary, and notify appropriate supervisor as appropriate.
• Prepare materials, set up and clean up programs, and help train new staff and volunteers on program content and procedures.
• Assist with meaningful research experiences for high school students engaged at Biosphere 2.
• Participate in/assist with operating Biosphere 2 special events and off site community events.
• Assist with Biosphere 2 research projects and lab operation and upkeep.
• Assist with Biosphere 2 residential programs such as Science Academy.
• Ability to receive continual training, put training into practice, and accept ongoing constructive feedback from supervisors.
• Maintain a neat and professional appearance per staff policy, including wearing a Biosphere 2 staff uniform.
• Other duties and tasks as may be assigned by supervisor.

• Must possess well developed skills that support creative approaches for working with adults, families, students, teachers, and the general public.
• Ability to engage and manage diverse groups of students, visitors, and guests.
• Ability to take initiative, work independently, and troubleshoot in a fast-paced work environment.
• Possess excellent problem solving skills, dependability, flexibility, and an outgoing and friendly personality.
• Must be comfortable speaking in front of large and small groups.
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time, climb stairs, and comfortably work indoors and outdoors in extreme temperature fluctuations.
• Must have the ability to work a flexible schedule of shifts that routinely includes weekends, evenings, and holidays.
• Must be comfortable with electronics and computers and have regular access to email.

Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, four years of progressively responsible instructional or subject work experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications

• Teaching certificate and experience teaching K-12 Science.
• Experience working in audience engagement (such as education, interpretation and programming) in a museum or informal education setting.
• Undergraduate college degree (BS or BA).
• Superior customer service skills.
• Passionate about life-long learning, science and inquiry-based education in an informal setting.
• Friendly, enthusiastic and engaging personality!
