Position Summary

Biosphere 2 is seeking candidates to conduct tours and present information about Biosphere 2 in an accurate, clear and enthusiastic manner. Multiple positions are available.

The Biosphere 2 is located north of Tucson – north of the Santa Catalina Mountains.

Biosphere 2 is one of the world’s most unique facilities dedicated to the research and understanding of global scientific issues. The Biosphere 2 facility serves as a laboratory for controlled scientific studies, an arena for scientific discovery and discussion, and a far-reaching provider of public education. Its mission is to serve as a center for research, outreach, teaching and life-long learning about Earth, its living systems, and its place in the universe; to catalyze interdisciplinary thinking and understanding about Earth and its future; to be an adaptive tool for Earth education and outreach to industry, government, and the public; and to distill issues related to Earth systems planning and management for use by policymakers, students and the public.

Duties & Responsibilities

•Conduct engaging, lively Biosphere 2 public tours with enthusiasm and scientific accuracy to diverse audiences while keeping within the parameter of time limits and the approved tour script.
•Routinely check for safety and security issues, take actions to resolve issues when necessary, and notify lead tour guide or supervisor as appropriate.
•Remain informed of new information (Biosphere 2 programs, scientific research, etc.) and appropriately relay that information to visitors.
•Possess clear knowledge of information involving Biosphere 2 apparatus, research, exhibits, and the campus facilities in order to properly respond to visitor questions quickly and accurately.
•Interpret exhibits and provide background information for Biosphere 2 visitors.
•Ability to receive continual training, put training into practice, and accept ongoing constructive feedback from managers.
•Conduct or assist with special programs, workshops, and tours when assigned.
•Maintain a neat and professional appearance as per tour guide policy, including wearing a Biosphere 2 uniform.
•Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

•Ability to navigate uneven stairs and grades up to 10%.
•Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time (approximately 7 miles per day), climb stairs, and comfortably work indoors and outdoors in extreme temperature fluctuations.
•Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with the public, fellow employees, managers and volunteers. Ability to comply with departmental and institutional confidentiality standards and requirements
•Ability to respond professionally to unusual or unexpected situations.
•Must have the ability to work a flexible schedule of shifts that routinely include weekends, evenings, and holidays.
•Ability to speak, read, and write clearly in English.
•Must be comfortable with electronics and computers and have access to email.
•Must be able to wear required uniform.

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, four years of progressively responsible instructional or subject work experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications

•Strong, well developed public speaking, teaching, and interpretative skills. Prior experience in teaching or group instruction is required.
•Ability to work enthusiastically, cooperatively and patiently with all visitors, staff, and volunteers.
•Ability to provide uniformly excellent customer service to all guests and consistently project a professional image of the Biosphere 2 team to all visitors.
